Postponed fob tiie Holidays.—As the next regulor sitting day of the District Court ■will fall on Easter Monday, it has been postponed till; the following Wednesday, April 12th.—For aimilar reasons the next meeting of the Sydenham Borough Oouncil stands over till the evening of the same day. Selwtn County Council. This body held an ordinary meeting this morning, and transacted a large amouut of business, particulars of which will bu found elsewhere. Jnebkiates —Four drunkarda were arrested in Christchnrch this day before noon. Boabd or Govbbnobs. —At a meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors, held yesterday, Meßsrs E. Bectham and T. "W. Maude were elected to fill two vacanoiti on the Board. Committed por Tbiai,. —At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, Ann Harris was committed for trial at the next sessions of the Supreme Court on a charge of infanticide. Bntbbtainmbnt.—Ammioal and dramatio entertainment In connection with the Southern Cross Lodge of Good Templars will be held in the Templar Hall, Worcester street, to-morrow evening. Ashley Masonic Lod&b. —The opening of the new haU erected by the members of the oraft on Peroival street, Rangiora, will be carried out on Thursday next, with a full ceremony, and it is expeoted in presence of one of the largest gatherings of Freemasons ever assembled in the northern district. Telephonic—The Grain Agercy Company have effeoted communication by telephone between their offices at Rakaia, Ohristohuroh and Timaru. This is the first in the township, but no doubt other firms will soon follow the example, and place themselves on the same footing as the new firm. Thh Delegated Powers.—Dr. Doyle moved hia resolution yesterday with reference to the advisableneas of withdrawing the delegated powers from the City Council, but at a late hour the adjournment of the Board was moved and carried, and the further disoussion of the matter stands over for the present. The Mayob and thb Boabd or Health. —At the usual meeting of the Board _of Health yesterday, it was resolved to resoicd the resolution previously arrived at with regard to letter of the Mayor, Bnd the chairman was requested to communicate with his Worship on the subject of his communication.
Fabbwbll Sbbmon.—On Sunday evening the Bev. W. A. Hands preached a farewell sermon in St. Stephen's Churoh, Ashburton, to a large congregation, Mr Hands proceeds in a few days to Southbridge, and will be succeeded at Ashburton by the Rev. Mr Scott, who will be inducted next Sunday by the Yen. Archdeaoon Harris. The Obphans' Annual Tbbat.—Mr W. Moßeth, of Messrs Harvey, Hawkios and Co' at Lyttalton, has arranged to liold the annual pionio of the inmates in the Orphanage at Qua'l Island next Thursday. For several years past Mr Mcßeth hrs generously made provision for a trip of the sort for the little folk. They will leave for the island on arrival at port of the 9 5 a.m. train. Quondam inmates of the Orphanage will be heartily made welcome.
Pbbbbntation.— Mr GK B. Denny, who has for some time past occupied the position of head waiter at Coker'a Hotel, was yesterday presented, on the occasion of his marriage, with a very handsome photograph album, bearing a snitible inscription, end a photographic group of the donors. The presentation was made by Mr E. J. Bolton, on behalf of the subscribers, who spoke of the high esteem in which Mr Denny was held by all who had come in oontact with him, to which he suitably replied. Geain Tbaffic. —In Ashburton, so far, during this season, owing to the disastrous effect of the nor'-westers, which caused a comparative scarcity of grain, the bulk of has been delivered at the produce merchants' private sheds, instead of, as last year, being forwarded to the Government railway shed. Nearly all the farmers in the neighboring districts have disposed of their grain, a large quantity of which is being held locally by the merchants. TKLEGBarH Aebakgbments fob Easter. —The hours of attendance on Good Friday at all telegraph offices whioh are open to the public oa Sundays and holidays, will be from 9 to 10 a.m. and 7 to 8 p.m., instead of the usual Sunday hours. It hei also been deoided that all telegraph offices shall be dosed to the public on Easter Monday except between the hours of 9 and 10 a m. and 7 and 8 p.m. Magistbatb's Coubt, Kaiapoi.—At tb ; s Court on Monday, before J. G. Porter, Esq., R.M., and Caleb Smith, Eiq., Mayor, in an adjourned case under the Education Act, in whioh J. Harper was oharged with neglecting to send h'"s child to school, it wes proved by the register in a Family Bible that the child was now over thirteen, the maximum school age, and the summons was dismissed An application was made by the plaintiff in a case of Eraser v B. AshwoTtb, jun., for a rehearing, whioh was adjourned, to be made before Mr Whitefoord. Abtistio.—Mr Mander«, the representative here of a number of Australian and other exhibitors, has received for exhibition from Miss Harris, of Nelson, a young lady of seventeen, some very artistic specimens of hand painting on satin. They are exceedingly pretty, especially one large mantel drape of black satin, upon whioh is handpainted an artistic repreientatian of the New Zealand olematis. The exhibits will be placed in the ladies' court, and are well worth speoial examination. Fibe Ihqtjiby.—An inquest we-! held on Saturday morning at Willesden, before E. J. Lee, Esq., coroner, to inquire into the cause of the etaok fire which took place on Wednesday evening last. Mr Thomas Harbottle was chosen foreman of the jury. The evidence of Captain Willis, Thomas Willis, and one of the men, was taken. Although there was no direct evidence to show that it was the work of an inoendiary, the oiroumstanoes were so suspicious that it was decided to adjourn the enquiry to Tuesday, April 2nd, at the Courthouse, Southbridge, the police in the meantime to make the moßt searching irquiries.
