NEW BBIGHTON RACES,

Stewards: B. Mitchell, M. H. Oram, J. Wild, J, Free, E. N. Oorser, J. Kerr, D. W. Hamilton. Judge : E. Mitchell. Clerk of the Course : E, W. Millett. Clerk of the Scales ; J. Laing. Starter : J. G. Beaton. Hon. Sec. and Treasurer : E. N. Coraer. Handicapper: B. Richaidson.

The meeting on Now Brighton Beach on Saturday was the most successful gathering of the kind hitherto held at this popular watering place. The day was beautifully fine, which, together with a light bracing sea breeze, rendered the outing most enjoyable to the fair sprinkling of townsmen who were fortunate enough to ba present. Mr Hamilton, the host ;of the New Brighton Hotel, provided an excellent cold collation, and the luncheon room was tastefully and pleasingly decorated. Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin’s totalisator, for a meeting such as this, did an excellent business ; close upon £SOO was passed through the instrument during the doy, and several good dividends were awarded the fortunate investors on winning horses. A protest was lodged against Darkie taking second money in the Cavalry Charge Handicap, on the ground of going inside a post ; and also against the riders of Foretop and Nipper in the Galloway Race, on the ground of pulling their horses, to allow Avon to win. Both protests will be considered by the stewards at a future meeting of the club. The one great drawback of the straight beach at New Brighton as a racecourse is the inability of the public to see, and the difficulty of the representatives of the press in describing a race, excepting at the finish j and we would suggest in future that the winning post be moved further down directly opposite to the balcony of the hotel, so that a better view may be obtained from that elevated position of the whole run, and at the same time be in a position to see the order in which the horses pass the winning post. The painstaking officers of the club are deserving of every credit for the success of their pleasant little meeting, and we take the present opportunity of thanking them for their uniform kindness in giving every information to the representatives of the Fourth Estate. The following are the details and the order in which the events were run : Maiden Platw, of 10 sovs. One mile. Weight for age. Mr H. J. Derrett’s b m Haidee, 4 yrs, Bst 121 b (Q. Derrett) 1 Mr P.
