THE EXHIBITION.
A meeting of tho musical committee for t/hti New Zealand International Exhibition was 5-eld ut the Council Chambers on Thursday woek.when it was resolved that competitive band performances be held at tho Exhibition, commencing on Tuesday, the 2nd of May ; und that a prize of £25 be given for tho be°t performance, and a further sum of £25 towards the travelling expenses of tho successful performers, also a prize of £5 each for the best performers on the violin and clarionet, and £lO 10a prize for the best chamber music. Also, oommenoing on Tuesday, 9th May, competitive choral performances, for which a prize of £25 will be given ; ••Ibo, for uuaccompanied glees or part songs, prize of £lO ; for vooal solo singing, soprano, contralto, tenor, and baps, a priza of £3 3s each for the best ; for school singing, with prize of £lO, to be expended in medals ; also, that a general concert be given in the second week of the opening of the Exhibition, and others at short intervals. Mr W. H. Sim ins to take charge of the first ooncert, and Mr Barnett of the second.
Messrs Simms, Barnett and Wells were appointed a subcommittee to draw up rules and regulations. Mr Izird was appointed secretary and treasurer, and from whom all information respecting the above can be obtained.
It is proposed to oxpend the sum of £SOO in the prizja. This amount will be partially raised by the charge for admission to special contests, for which the season tickets will not be available.
All societies or persons wishing to aid or join in the musical arrangements are requested to apply to Mr Izard, the secretary, as early as possible. In order to make the amusement* connected with the Exhibition as perfect as possible, prizes and gratuities will have to bo given to a considerable amount, and it is hoped that the public will aid the various committees by giving subscriptions liberally. A general meeting of Orangemen was held last week in the Orange Hall, Worcester street, to consider the question of taking part in the prooession at the opening of the Exhibition. There were about thirty members present, and Mr Prudhoe, W.G-.M., presided. It was resolved, on the motion of Bro. Fleming, seconded by Bro. Palmer—" That the Orangemen maroh with colors and sashes in the Exhibition procession." Bro. Stapleton was appointed to aot as Doputy Marshal, and it was stated that the services of the Protestant Alliance band would probably be secured.
Mr Apsley Fellatt, the representative of the Worcester Porcelain Company, and also of several "Victorian exhibitors, is now in Christohuroh, having arrived by the Albion on Friday last, as also has M. Ugester, of Switzerland, who has acted as grand Executive Commissioner at the Philadelphian, Sydney, and Melbourne Exhibitions, for that country.
