CANTERBURY EWE FAIR.

The annual Ewe Fair, under the auspices of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was held this day on the grounds of the association; and, as was the case on previous occasions, was not a success. The first lot offered was fifteen four and six tooth stud Lincoln ewes on behalf of Mr J. Reid, of ■Hilderslie, which were successively sold in three lots of five each to Mr McDonald, at 3gs, 2jge, and 2Jgs each respectively. Forty Romney Marsh ewes from the fiook of the same owner were next submitted, but failing to elicit a higer bid than 1 guinea a head, were passed. The auctioneer (Mr J. T. Matson) then offered a lot of seventeen English Leicester owes on behalf of Mr James Grigg. The first five were bought by Mr J. T. Ford at 6gs each. The next six, which were fourtooth, were bought by Mr J. Raid at 2gs each, the remainder being passed. Nine Border Leicester ewes, on account of Mr Alexander Mclntyre, wore quitted at half a guinea each to Mr T. Gunnell, and four ewe lambs of the same breed fell to Mr James Johns at 8i eaoh.l Mr C. Newton then offered a fine lot of twenty-four Lincolns on account of Mr E. Menlove, but they were passed, sgt being the highest bid obtainable for them. Ten fine stud Lincolns from Mr Reid’s station were also passed in, as also were ten Romney Marsh stud ewes belonging to the same owner. Mr J. T. Matson then offered a line of 2,4, 6 and 8-tooth Lincolns on account of Mr James Johns, but these too we'e passed. Eighty Lincoln ewes, offered on behalf of' Mr E. Mitchell, were also passed in at 2gs each. Soma private sales of rams left over from yesterday were effected, notably erne twotooth Lincoln from Mr G. G. Russell’s fl ick going to Messrs Henderson and Moßolh for the sum of 15gs. Mr Austin also bought two of Mr D. Thomas’s Border Leicester rams at. 3gs each, three others of tho same lot going to Mr James Ashworth at the same figures; and nine of Mr J. Grigg’s Lincolns that were passed yesterday were bought by Mr B. Mitchell at |3ga each. Several other private ■ales are on the tapis, of which we hope to give full particulars hereaftor.
