CANTERBURY RAM AND EWE FAIR.
The annual Bam and Ewe Fair was commenced this morning shortly before eleven o'clock by Mr Tabart, of Messrs B. Wilkin and Co., calling the attention of breeders to a lot of twenty Lincoln rams belonging to Mr F. Sutton, of Southland, three only of which were sold to the Hon. H. B. Gresson at eaoh. Thirty-six Lincoln rams were then offered on aocount of the Hon. Matthew Holmes, the highest price obtained for one of them being 15gs, the others going at prices ranging from llgs to 2gs each to various buyers. These were followed by thirty-one Border Leicesters belonging to the same gentleman selling at from sgs to 2£gs each. Ten more of the same breed, on aooount of N.Z. and A.L. Co. then went, five at 6gs and five at sgs eaoh to Mr J. Sharp and Mr Hood respectively. These gave place to ten Lincolns of the same owner, which went at from 7gß to sgs. Mr J. T. Matson, then assumed command, and placed three four-tooth and one six-tooth English Leicesters. The first three at sgs eaoh, and the six-tooth at 16gs, fell to the nod of Mr Brydon. A line of three four-tooth Lincolns belonging to Mr 0. T. Dudley were patted at 4$ gs, but a grand lot of Border Leicesters belonging to Mr Boag, 62 in number, were sold at prices ranging from 7Jgs to 4gs. Mr O. Newton then asked for a verdict on ten Bomneys, which were passed at 6gs. Sixty Lincoln; were then submitted on account of Mr J. Beid by the same gentleman, five of which fell to Mr P. Grant for 4Jgs eaoh, the rest being passed in. A grand lot of Lincolns were next interviewed, belonging to the Hon. M. Holmes, the first pick of which fell to Mr E. Mitchell for 25gs, the others fetching from sgs to 3gs eaoh. A lot of Border Leicesters ranged in pries from 6Jgs to 4Jgs, these being from the N.Z. and A. Land Company's flocks. Mr H. Matson pissed nine grand two-tooth Linoolns, from Mr G. G. Busiell, at 6&gs each, but quitted eleven of that gentleman's English Leicesters at from EUso to sgs eaoh. A lot of Mr J. Grigg's two-tooth Lincolns were then dealt with, from 8?s to Hrs, some being passed in. Mr 0. Newton resumed with a nice lot of fifteen merinos belonging to Mr H. D. Gardener, but they were passed. A lot of twenty-one Leicester rams of Mr S. Garforth fell to Mr Bobert'.on at 2i?s each. Four Southdown ram lambs were bou h l . by Mr F. Sutton at 2gs each. A single Southdown ram was sold to Mr Ludley at ligs. Mr Pitt's Border Leicesters came next, three falling to Mr Inglebeit at 3igs each ; twelve more of the same lot being bought by Mr Innis Bt 3Jgs each. Ten of that gentleman's Laicester ram lambs wtre bought by Mr Alexander at 3gs a head. A lino of fifteen English Leioesters fell to Messrs Maxwell and Mathias at 4igs each. Mr Campbell then failed to elicit a bid for two of Kirkham and Marshall's rams. About 400 persons were present at tho sale, which was proceeding when we went to press.
