LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council took place last night Present—Hia Worship the Mayor, and *'ra. Smith, Reed, Grubb, Stinson, Garforth, Weyburne, Maodona'd, Webb. Receipts since laat meeting were reported at £ll7 10s. A letter was read from the Minister of Public Works, promising that ateps would be taken to have the bridge erected over the railway crossings at Lyttelton station. Captain MoLellan wrote again with regard to his application for a retaining wall to bo erected at the Council’s expense. He stated that he had had the section surveyed for the fourth time, and every survey proved that the Council had encroached upon hi - property. A long discussion ensued npon the matter, Or. Webb speaking strongly in favor of putting up a retaining wall at the Council’s expense. The Mayor pointed out that ’he considered the Council should abide by the action of their officers, and did not sec why _ they should set their opinion aside for Captain MoLellan’s surveyor’s opinion. Cr. Smith proposed, and Cr. Wey burne seconded McLellan’s letter bo acknowledged, and he be informed that the Council cannot taka any further action in the matter.” Carried. Cr. Grubb voted against. IChequoa for accounts amounting to •£145 8s 6d were signed. A progress payment of £174 18s 9d, on account of sewers in construction, was passed, and cheque signed for it. It waa decided to strike an ordinary rate of 5 per cent, in the onnd, and a watfr rate of l| per cent. Or. Macpherson tendered hie resignation as a councillor, owing to his intended temporary absence from the colony. The Mayor and Conncil expressed their regret at the circumstance which had caused Cr. Macpherson to resign, and a resolution was passed thanking that councillor for the services he had rendered as a member of the Council. Ee the vote of the United Insurance Association to the Lyttelton Fire Brigade, the Council resolved to devote £ls in aid of the funds, as the association vote was that much less this year than in previous years, and the Brigade had reckoned npon the usual vote. The Council, after some unimportant discussion, adjourned.
