THE NORMAL SCHOOL.

Some statements recently appeared in newspapers outside of Canterbury concerning alleged serious irregularities in the infant department of the Normal School. At the meeting of the Board of Education yesterday tho chairman stated that an investigation had been made into the circumstances, and that there was no evidence to substantiate the charges made. The inquiry was conducted by the principal of tho school, who submitted a report, which was read and considered in committee, it not being deemed necessary to mate it public. The gentleman who made the complaint, and who was present at the investigation, has expressed himself satisfied with the steps taken by the Board in the matter, and the public will doubtless be pleased to hear that, after what must be presumed to have been a searching and impartial inquiry, charges of so grave a nature cs those in question have been proved to be groundless. The chairman made some remarks on the fact that although, for the purpose of preventing publicity, the matter was first discussed by the Board in committee, yet it found its way into the pablio press, and would almost appear to have implied that this occurred through the medium of our representative, who was, therefore, guilty of a breach of confidence. If Mr Inglis had taken the trouble to make the same inquiries at our office as bo did at that of our contemporary the “Lyttelton Times,” he would have been assured, as he now is, that the publication complained of did not emanate from any one connected with, the Pbksu.
