THE BEST OE THE GANG.
It will be remembered tbat on Friday last, two young men, named Eichard and Edward Chamberlain, were heavily fined at the Resident Magistrate's Court for the ahare they had taken in leveral brutal assaults on unoffending people in High street on the night of February 25th last. Owing to the uncertainty of the polioe aa to their witnesses, the two were charged only with " behaving in a manner calculated to provoke a breach of the peace," in consequence of which they got off with comparatively lenient sentences. Since then, by warrant, the polioe have arrested five others, Charles Chamberlain, a brother of the two who were fined, Charles Bnshell, and William Butterwortb, who were brought up on Monday ; and John Gilpin and Thomas Fahr were brought up this day The charge against them was the same as the first batch, but tho police stated that they would be so amended as to take in at least tiro cases of violent assault, and three of common assault, by which means it is hoped to secure for them adequate pnnishment. It i« stated that Mr W. H. Clements, one of the victims, who had his jaw broken and some of his teeth knooked down his throat, is now in consequence of the injuries in a dangerous position. From reports received by the polioe of further brutal outrages on Saturday night ?ist, it <> clear that the mild punishment inflicted on the Chamberlains has not had a sufficiently deterrent effect. It is sincerely to be hoped that, if guilty, the offences they are charge with will be sheeted home to those now ia custody, and tbat they will be made a standing warning to others of our class who are fast becoming a terror to the community.
