The Select Committee and the Irish Land Act* In the House of Commons to-day, the motion introduced by Mr Gladstone on the 27th ult., setting forth that the projected inquiry by the Select Committee of the House of Lords into the working of the Irish Land Act was untimely, and would defeat the operations of that measure, and prove injurious to good Government in Ireland, was carried on division by 303 to 235. The Markets. Consols, 100 L The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £13,250,000. New Zealand securities are without change in price. The markets for colonial breadstuffs and tallow remain dull. The Wool Sales. An animated demand continues to be experienced at the wool sales. To-day’s catalogues comprised 9600 bales. March 10. High Treason* Roderick McLean, who made an attempt on the life of the Queen on the 2nd instant, was to-day committed for trial on a charge of high treason. VIENNA, March 10. The Rebellion in HerzegovinaTelegrams are to hand reporting that the Herzegovinian insurgents have lately suffered several defeats at different points at the hands of the Austrian troops, and that they are rapidly losing ground and falling back from their positions. WASHINGTON, March 9. Chinese Exclusion Bill* The Chinese Exclusion Bill is still under discussion in the Senate. At today’s sitting an amendment to the measure was proposed with a view of admitting skilled Chinese workmen, but after debate the amendment was rejected by a large majority. March 10. At a later period of yesterday’s sitting, and after a protracted debate, the Chinese Exclusion Bill was finally passed by the Senate.
