THE WOODSTOCK BUSH.
[press association telegram.)
HOKITIKA, March 8,
Gold was struck yesterday by Heron and party on a flat above Woodstock, on the south side of the Hokitika River, on sinking fifty feet. The depth of wash (three to four feet) is estimated to yield five pennyweights to the load. Several shafts are going down, and a good many claims are pegged out. The flat, though immediately in the vicinity of the terrace working close to the river, has been untried. It is of considerable extent, and it is believed a new lead has been found. There Was some excitement in town to day on the npws being received. Warden Giles has visited the ground rushed at Woodstock, and a prospect of one dish was washed out in bis presence. It gave from three to four grains of gold. Several other dishes were subsequently washed by miners, giving a similar result. A large number of claims have been pegged out, and a dozen business sites bave been marked off already. The prospectors will commence opening out their tomorrow. It will take another fortnight before any approximate idea can be formed as to the extent of auriferous grounds
