CRICKET.

On the Association ground on Saturday the match between the Midland and U.O.C oluba was commenced. The Midland were the first to go to the wickets, and for some time it looked extremely bad for them, the first seven wickets falling for comparatively few runs. Messrs Horner and Fiiirhurat then made a stand, and the score was finally raised to 130. Of this total Buohanan made 21, J. Fowler 16, Horner 24, and Fairhurst 33. The fielding of the U.C.O. was frightfully loose. One of them absolutely dropped five catches, and only succeeded in securing the sixth. The U.O.C. began well. Longden made 22 before he was disposed of, while Million put together 17 and Ashby a very smart 17, both these pl*yers being not out. With 2 extra* the U.O.C. thus scored 58, with only one wicket down.

I On the Midland ground the second eleven : of the Midland played an eleven denominated the Nondeßcripts. The latter only notched 22, Paul making the highest score with 7. The M.idlandera began freely, and ended by runsing up 151 in remarkably quick time. Of these Hill made 26, Bel! 21, Digby 29, Whiting 14, Grossman 10, and Hargreaves 15, not out. A matoh was played on Saturday between the Sandridge CO. and Biccarton CO., resulting in a very easy win for the former by one innings and 6 runs. The scores were— Biccarton, 28 and 33; Sandridge, 72. For the former D. Curton scored 17 and 17; for the latter, W. Allardyce 28, and J. Eeast 13. For Sandridge T. Beere and W. Allardyce, and for Biccarton D. Curton, bowled exceedingly well. A match was played between the Bangiora and Baiapoi Clubs on the ground of the former club on Saturday. In the first innings the Kaiapoi men scored 27, against 38 made by the home team. In the second innings the visitors made 73 runs with the loss of nine wickets before time was called. The game was decided on the first innings in favor of the Bangiora men. E. Sheard made the the highest soore of the day, namely, 21 in the second innings, A most enjoyable game was played on Friday last between the Auctioneers and Merchants on Mr J. T. Matson's ground, that gentleman having had an excellent wicket prepared for the occasion. The Auctioneers having won the toss elected to bat, and put together 55 runs in their first effort, the Merchants following with 88. After the lunoheon adjournment the knights of the hammer started their second innings, and were all disposed of for 63. With only 31 run a to get the game appeared a moral for the Merchants, but with the proverbial uncertainty of cricket, the total at the fall of the last wicket reaohed 13 only, this result being in a great measure due to the excellent bowling of Messrs Harley and Mataon. For the Merchants the following reached double figures—Paul, 25 ; Sutcliffe, 16 ; Rnd Pavitt, 15. For the Auctioneers, Messrs Matson and Thomas batted well, miking totals of 27 and 34 respectively. The following members will play for the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry in their return match on Wednesday next, the Bth inn., commencing at 10.30 a.m.:—Captains Slater and Wright, Lieut. Lee, Instructor Dundas, Sergt. Dunbar, Corpl. Hopper, Troopers Burnley, Grant, Anderson, and Bridge, Bandsman Wheatley. The Cavalry Band will be in attendance. The following will play against the Kaiapoi Club next Saturday in a match between it and the schoolmasters of North Canterbury:— Goodeve, Soott, Easton, Cooper, Taylor, Just. Wilkinson, Banks, Conner, Howard, and Oumberworth. The match takes place on the Bangiora ground. A match was played on Saturday in the North Park, between the Standard C.C. and the Merivale CO., who played two men short. The match resulted in favor of the former by nine wickets. The scores were— Standard, first innings, 46 ; second, one man out for 12 runs. Merivale, first innings, 44 ; second, 12 runs.
