SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the above Council took place on Monday at the Council Chamber. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Pavitt, Hall, Nioholls, Webber, Forrester, Brown, and Andrew. Or. Pavitt apologised for the absenoe of Or. Langdown on aooocut of his being out of town. A letter from Or. White, stating that from illness he was still unable to attend. The clerk was ordered to reply, and express the hope that Or. White would soon be able to fill his usual place. The Town Clerk reported the following correspondence :—Circular from the Registrar General, requesting a return for statistical purposes of the actual number of inhabitable houses in the borough. The return has been furnished, showing the numbers to have been in 1881, 1717; in 1882, 1775. From Mr A. Russel, junior clerk, resigning his situation. The resignation was acoepted. The clerk was instructed to furnish him with a reference, and to advertise for a suocessor, to be paid at the rate of £4O per annum. From the town clerk, Ohristchurcb, acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the Sydenham Borough Council, suggesting a conference to consider the cost of maintaining hospitals and charitable aid, and stating in reply that the City Council would have no objection to send a representative, but could not undertake the responsibility of oonvening it. It was resolved to write to the Government, asking for information as to what, if anything, was intended to be done in the coming session, the clerk being instructed accordingly. From Mr P. Ooates and other ratepayers in the private streets in B.S. No. 71, asking the Oounoil to take the necessary steps to have the said streets declared public streets, and to put them into proper repair. The matter had been dealt with and reported on by the works committee. From the clerk to the Drainage Board, stating that that Board expected to be able to strike the rate for the year as soon as the valuation is determined, and expressing a hope that the Council would undertake its collection at a lower rate of commission than that charged last year. Mr J. Gould waited on the Council to ask its consent to the construction of certain streets through private property near Going's road. Certain alterations in the plans laid before the Council were suggested, to which Mr Gould agreed conditionally, and the matter was referred to the works committee with power to aot. The works committee reported having ordered the foreman of works to go on with the construction of streets in B.S. 71 and with the shingling of Campbell street. The Heathcote Boad Board had approved of the siding allowed by the Council near Lancaster Park. The report was approved. The finance committee reported the receipts during the past fortnight to have been £412 18s lid. Aooounts amounting to £B6B 19s 7d had been passed for payment, the credit balance at tho Bank remaining at £692 Os lid. The report was read and adopted. The action of the town clerk in furnishing roll and aoting as poll olerk at the late election of licensing committee was approved. The town clerk was instructed to write again to the Government re letting of the reserves. On the motion of Or. Webber, seconded by Or. Andrew, the works committee were requested to call for tenders to sink an artesian well and fix a tank for the soryice of the water cart and general purposes in the yard belonging to the Council in Colombo road. Some conversation took place about the proposal by the Acclimatisntion Society to make a charge for admission to a portion of Hagley Park. Or. Andrew intended to move that the M.H.B. for the district be asked to oppose any step in Parliament that may be attempted in that direction in the coming session. It was the general opinion, k iwever, that such a step would j\ist now ho premature, and the matter dropped. Ths Council then went into oommlttee, and on resuming ad'ourncd.
