The camps of Mr Breakell, engineer, and Mr Haokett, contractor, on the Agricultural Association'* land at Waito, were burned, the men losing their tools and clothes. Disloyalty and its EffectsMr J. Mr John Lundon moved a vote of thanks to the lecturer, and took occasion to refer to the Land League meeting in Wellington, stating the speech he delivered on that occasion prejudiced his eleotion for the Assembly. A Misdemeanant* Mi* Johns, the late Liberal candidate for the Waipa, was fined £6 lis, with oosts, at the Te Awamutu Police Court for using threatening and abusive language. Portable Gasholder. The lunatio asylum was lighted with gasoline, and the experiment was very successful. NAPIER, February 27. Harbour Work* A meeting of subscribers to the fund for getting Mr Goodall, C.E., of Timaru, to prepare a scheme, for the harbor at Napier Bluff was held this evening. It was announced that Mr Goodall was preparing a modified soheme, to cost less than that already submitted, which involves an expenditure of £300,000. Sad Colonists. At a meeting to-night it was decided to form a branch of the Irish Land League, The speakers were very quiet. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 27. The Constabulary. Two hundred of the Armed Constabulary are about to be removed from Opunake to the Waikato.
A Maori Tragedy. A Maori named Haniatu committed snioide at Parihaka. On Sunday ho found his wife in company with a paramour, and he at once went and hanged himself in a whare, where his body was discovered two hours later. There was great excitement amongst the Natives, and had the offenders not levanted previously, summary vengeance would have been taken. A great tangi was held. WELLINGTON, February 27. The Volunteer Commission. The Volunteer Land Claims Commission sit here until the 16th, and then go to Auckland, opening there on the 28th. Mr George Downie is appointed seoretary and reporter to the Commission. Pretentious. Councillor Diver has given notioe that he will move that the Corporation advertise in the London " Times " and other papers for a oontract to light the oity by eleotricity for a term of five years. WE3TPOBT, February 27. The s s- Westport.
Aftor much trouble two oentrifugal pumps were got to work at the s.s. Westport this morning, and have worked in a spasmodic manner during the day, so far with excellent results. The after hold is nearly clear, and the water is now boing pumped out of the engine room in excellent aiyle. The forehold will be got at when the tide falls. It is hoped the steamer will then float. The after part is now afloat, but the forepart is pinned to the ground. An inquiry into the oause of the disaster will be held. Our Products. Over 1100 tons of ooal were shipped from here this week. TIM ABU, February 27. Pedestrianism. The Australian pedestrians won oil the events. There was a good attendance, and the public were hishly phased. DUNEDIN February 27. The Sew Opera. Williamson's Opera Company produced " Patience" here tonight to one of the biggest houses ever seen here, the audionce being equal to the occasion of opening the theatre by lima de Murska. The performance was an immense success. One duet was encored twice, and the "dragoon chorus" also was encored, as well as other numbers. There is no doubt of its long and suocossful run. Navvies Wanted. Mr Proudfoot is advertising for 500 navvies for railway contraots in New South Wales.
