THE NELSON RIFLE MEETING.

[PBBSS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.] NELSON, February 27. There was beautiful weather to-day for the commencement of the shooting at Brightwater. The firing was delayed this afternoon, owing to tbe markers striking for 7a per day and found ; the Association offered ss, but the men persisted in their demand, and in oonsequenoe were dismissed. A detaohment of Armed Constabulary, with some little assistance, marked, but four targets were disused, owing to the want of markers. The Major, Mr Baillie, is in oommand, with Capt. Bebb as adjutant. The former, in addressing the representatives, hoped the men would pay proper respeot to tbe members of the staff. He mentioned that it had been reported that several representatives had practised at a target within the distance prohibited by the Association, and said if this were true and any person protested against their action, the protest would be fatal. The first and seoond prizes of the first matoh, which were struck off this morning, have been replaced by the exeoutive oommittee, but their decision will have to be confined by tbe Counoil. Twenty-five per oent. of the prize money has been deduoted absolutely and 20 per cent, temporarily. The latter, however, will be refunded when the association is in funds. It has been deoided that any ties for the N.R.A. silver medal will be fired off shot for shot at 500 yards. The shooting today on the whole was far from good, several of the best shots being well down on the list. The oatering was very bad, and on one or two occasions some delay was made in obtaining meals. The usual formality of a lady firing the first shot has been done away with. The attendance of spectators to-day was not large. About 100 ladies and gentlemen were present. The first match was that named " The Nelson Match," and owing to the four targets being disabled it did not finish until six o'clock. The following are the prize takers in the order named : i

Very dull weather prevails to-day. The Otago match of 200 yards is just concluded. It it expected the championship matches will finish by five o'clock to- morrow evening. The Auckland match is concluded. A alight shower of rain fell during the match, but it is tow cleared off. A general meeting of representatives will be held to-morrow to take into consideration the question of having the meetines of the association moveable instead of as at present arranged.
