SPORTING.
DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB BACEB.
Second Day. [press association telegram.] DUNEDIN, February 24 Again the weather was propitious in the highest degree, and as a consequence there was a good attendance for the second day—probably about 4000. There was an excellent day’s sport, and the experience of the meeting so far seems to have proved that the totalisator, although it has killed bookmaking, and thus may have a bad effect on racing generally—because owners will perhaps be scarcely prepared to travel horses round the colony for stakes alone —has at least had a purifying influence in preventing collusion and chicanery. Except the Publicans’ Handicap yesterday, in which, only three starting, the result seemed to have been arranged for Nautilus, there has not been a suspicion of unfair racing. To-day there were excellent fields, and the handicapping was really excellent. £SIOO was put through the totalisators to-day. The three were owned by the Club. The following wore the results : Talltho Handicap of 60 sovs ; one mile and a halt, over seven flights of hurdles. Mr Poster’s g g Socket, aged, 9st 101 b (Cotton) 1 Mr O’Brien’s hr g Trovatore, 4 yra, Sat 101 b 2 Quamby, list, and Isaac, Bst 71b, also ran. Clarence, 12st 121 b, was scratched. Socket, Quamby and Trovatore were equal favorites, the first-named being most in request. Quamby and Socket raced well together till within a quarter of a mile from home, when Trovatore came up and challenged the leaders, but Socket was full of running, and won hands down. Time— 3min Stseos. City Stakes Handicap, for two-year-olds only, 150 sovs. ; second horse to receive 20 sovs. Five furlongs. Mr Borsford’s ch f Nonsense, by Albany— No Name, Bst 121 b ... ... Mr Kirby’s br o Qoai, by King Phillip— Lady, 3yrs, fist 1 Mr Butler’s Laertes, aged, Bst 121 b ... 2 Bonghleen Dhonn, Jasper, and Dolly Barwon also ran. This race caused much excitement. At the first attempt, after a good deal of fiddling, all the jockeys, but Derrett on Laertes, imagined the flag fell, and went off at a gallop, Jasper leading. Derrett followed, and a grand race ensued, G-oai winning after a hard struggle from Boughleen Dhoun. Then it was declared no race, and, although the fortunate investor* on G-oai, of whom there were only ten out of 186 on one instrument, rushed it, no dividend was forthcoming, and no fresh business was done. Another start was made at once, and, after an excellent race, Goai again won by a length and a half from Laertes. Boughleen Dhoun refusing to travel. The time was 2min. Iseo. for the second race, D. J.G. Handicap of 200 sovs, with a sweep of 5 sovs, to go to second horse ; one mile and three quarters. Sir H. Eobinson’s b m Lady Emma, by Yattendon—My Fancy, 4 yra, Sat 41b (M. Allan) 1 Mr D. Dauphin 7st, King Quail 7sfc B':b, Poet 7st 51b, Legerdemain Cat 71b, and Matakan 8a 21b also ran.
The betting was 5 to 2 against Lady Emma and Libeller, 3 to 1 the Dauphin, 4 to 1 Tasman, 5 to 1 Poet and King Quail, 6 to 1 Matakau, 10 to I Legerdemain.
The starting was productive of the usual fiddling, and when the flag fell it was to a straggling get away, of which The Dauphin and King Quail had all the best, with Legerdemain bringing up the rear. The last-named quickly made play, and took up the running, and Lady Emma went up into third place. The Poet, Tasman and Libeller were all well up, and Matakau soon took a back seat, which he never got out of till the finish. Passing the stand the first time Lady Emma was lying third, bard held. All round the back the horses lay in a cluster. Half a mile from home it was impossible to tell which was likeliest to win, but coming into the straight Lady Emma had the lead. While young Allen almost sat still, all the others were urging their steeds to the utmost. Towards the post it was seen that Tasman was second, and Libeller third, and in spite of all endeavors these positions were unaltered, Lady Emma passing the post a length ahead. After the placed horses the rest were in a cluster close up, with Matakau whipping in. The race throughout was an evidence of the excellence of the handicapping. Lady Emma was quite untouched by the whip or spur, and actually had not turned a hair. This victory was again an extremely popular one. Time 3min. lliseo. Teamwat Plate, o£ 60 sovs, gift of D. Proudfoot, Esq.; weight-for-age; threequarters of a mile. Mr Horsford’s br f Siesta, by Traducer— Hammock, 2 yrs, 6st 121 b ... Betting—Level on Billingsgate, 2 to I ageinnt Siesta, 3 to 1 Nautilus. Billingsgate and Nautilus jumped away with the lead at a fast pace, and held it neck and neck till the turn. Then Siesta came and passed the post a length and a-half ahead, hard held, winning with the greatest ease. Nautilus was a bad third, and the others were nowhere. Flora being last. In one of the totalisators, 101 out of 341 were on the winner. Time—lmin 18 J secs. The proceedings concluded with a hack race.
