DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB RACES. FIBST DAT. [PEBBS ASSOCIATION TBLEOBAH.] DUNEDIN, February 23. The three day*' meeting began to-day in presenoe of about 8000 people. It wbb favored with exceptionally fine weather, and the club had secured the services of the Austrian band to play on the lawn for the enjoyment of visitors. The public did a little of sweepstake business, but in a half secret fashion, and the polioe took the names of one party who went openly into it. These included two Dunedin M.H.B.'e. The totalisators did a very brisk busineis, and the three of them must have put through four or five thousand pounds. The racing was very good, the Cup particularly producing a grand oontest. Lady Emma's running was a surprise. She Cime very well when called on, and won with a little to spare, in tho fastest time in whioh it has yet been dono. Mataku cut up badly, the first mile clean baking him, and Chancellor after all proved the best of Cutts' trio. The Publicans" Handicap brought out only a small field, and Luna seemed to allow Nautilus to have it all her own way. The Champagne Stakes were landed by Mr Horsford (Dr. Prins, of Ohristchurch) with Nonsense, much apparently to the Hon. Robinson's surprise, for he put a lot of money on to Vanguard just before the start. The following were the results : Handicap Hurdle Rack of 80 soys; second horse to receive 10 bovb ; two miles and a distance. Mr Batler's Agent, by Oliver Cromwell, aged, 12st (Lyford) 1 Mr Zurbano's Trovatore. 4 yra, Bat 71b Clifford) 2 Mr Lunn's Clarence aged. llßt 121 b (Lunn) 3 Rocket, 10at; Isaac, 9at 121 b; Dandy, 9at 71b ; Carrigeen, 9at; Trovatore, Bst 71b ; also started.
Rocket and Olarenoe broke away Beveral times, but a splendid start was at length got. Agent went up with a rush at tho back of the course and challenged the leaders, and an exciting race ensued between Trovatore, Olarenoe and Agent. They entered the straight almost neok and neck, but Agent came along almost without asking, and won by a length and a half. Rooket fell. Time, 4mins 32secs. Clarence was principally backed in the totalisator. Champagne Stakes, for two-year-olds—A sweepstake of 10 sovs each, with 150 sovs added ; second horse to receive 20 sovs. Six furlongs. Mr B. Horsford's ch f Nonsense, by Albany —No Name, Bst 71b (Hickton) 1 Hon. W. Robinson's br c Vanguard, by Traducer—En Avant. Bst 101 b ... Siesta was scratched. Vanguard was a deoided favorite, and a rush was made on him on the totalisator towards the start. Out of 273 investors on one instrument, 160 were on him. The betting was 6 to 4 against Vanguard, 5 to 2 against Nonsense. There was a straggling start, which Nonsense had all the best of, Turquoise coming next. The raoe ay entirely between the three placed horses. Vanguard made his effort about a quarter of a mile from home, but could only pass Turquoise, and Nonsense won with great ease by a length and a half. The three first horseß had several lengths advantage of all the rest. Time — lmin 18joo.
Dunedin Cup Handicap, of 500 sovs, with a sweep of 10 aovs added ; second horse to receive 50 sova; third, 20 aovs. Two miles and a distance. Sir H. Robineon's b m Lady Emma, by Yattendon—My Fancy, 4 vtb, 7st 61b (M.Allan) 1 Mr Walter's br h Libeller, 5 yrs, 7st 81b (Watfcie) 2~ Mr Goodman's br h Chancellor, aged, 7st 121 b (Hoskins) 3 Mr S. Mr Shand's Titania was scratched. Mataku and Libeller were favorites, the latter at 2 to 1, the former deolining to 100 to 40. Hilda, 6 to 1; Tasman, Ohanoellor, Lady Emma and Dauphin the same ; 10 to 1 against The Foet and Adamant. The race was regarded as a most_ open event, and all the horses had baokers in the totalisator. The start was a fair one, Mataku, Libeller and the Dauphin getting the beßt of it, with Adamant and Tasman in the roar. Mataku and the Dauphin went off with a great lead, the ohesnut colt evidently being unable to be restrained. For some time Libellar held third plaoe, about four or five lengths behind the first pair; but after three-quarters of a mile had been negotiated King Quail began to oome, and challenged Libeller a mile from home —that is, just passing the Grand Stand. The Dauphin was leading, and going all he knew, his jookey apparently thinking he was at the winning post. Mataku was done, and dropped behind from this point, never being in it again, and finishing last. Another quarter of a mile, and the field closed up, and the proverbial sheet might have covered half a dozen of them, King Quail, The Poet, Libeller, Adarn&nt, Lady Emma, and Chancellor. Then Chancellor and Adamant came a little, and towards the turn Lady Emma. Libeller was also sticking gamely to it. As the horses came in view the Zetland spots were seen in the lead, and she held her advantage all the way up. Libeller had the outside running, and many thought he would be able to out her down at the post, but it was not to be, and he passed the judge a length and a half behind, Chancellor an excellent third, King Quail almost level with him, Adamant next, and the rest in straggling order, Mataku, clean baked, brought up the rear along with Hilda. There was rauoh cheering as the Hod. .G. McLean's mare was led up to the soaks, and this win of an Otago sportsman was thoroughly popular ; out of 512 investors at £2 on the prinoipal totalisators, only 25 were on Lady Emma. The time was 3min. 5558e0. The total invested in the Cup was £2170.
