The Waverley Hotel, in Queen street, was discovered to be on lire at two o’clock this morning, and before the fire brigade succeeded in getting the flames under, a considerable portion was completely gutted. The hotel is the property of the City Council. The building was insured for £4OO in the South British and £3OO in the National. Samuels’ stock of cutlery, which was damaged by water, was insured in the Sun office for £250. PATE A, February 24. Fire. The police stable was gutted by fire la&t night. The weather was calm, or the County Council buildings must have gone. The fire is attributed to the spontaneous combustion of some hay. The Native Lands. Mr Parris, the Native Commissioner, made the final payment to the Natives here yesterday on account of the Government land purchases. BLENHEIM, February 24. Wreck in Tory Channel. The Star of the Sea, schooner, belonging to Havelock, became a total wreck off Tory Channel. She is insured for £SOO in the National, about a third of her value. The captain reports that in attempting to take the entrance at midnight last night the vessel missed stays, and struck on a rock, drifting off almost immediately and settling down. The captain is a heavy loser, having a quantity of cargo on board uninsured.
