Mr Gladstone on the Land Laws,—The following letter from Mr Gladstone has been received by the (honorary secretary or the London and Counties Liberal Union:—“lo, Downing street, Whitehall, December 16th.— Sir,—l am directed by Mr Gladstone to thank you for communicating to him a copy of the resolution which was adopted at the recent meeting of the General Council of the London and Counties Liberal Union in favor of reforming the land laws of Great Britain, In reply, I am to assure you that her Majesty’s Government are very sensible of the importance of the subject; but, regarding this and other legislation, I am to observe that as to time much must depend on the reform which it may be possible to effect in Parliamentary procedure.—l am| g; r your obedient servant, E. W. Hamilton,—Mr J. Irving Courtenay.”
The amount of wool exported from Sydney direct to England and America for the year ended August 31st was 226,768 bales, as against 191,681 bales for the previous year, being an increase of 35,141 bales. The Duke of Northumberland’s farm bailiff, who made 210 tons of h ay by Gibbs’ machine this year, reports most favorably on the experiment.
