EXHIBITION ENTERTAINMENTS COMMITTEE.

An adjourned meeting of the above was held at 4 pm. on Tuedaya, in the City Council Chambers. Present—Hie Worship the Mayor, Messrs Wolfe, J. Ollivier, A. C. Wilson, E. Walton, B. N. Newby, Leahy, A. Ayers, T. S. Lambert, T. Searell, F. T. Baskins (bon. eeoj, J Holmes, N. _Q. Barnett, Woodford, P. Norris, W. N. Million, A. H. Anderson. The Mayor said that the meeting was he'd to receive the report of the collection committee, and be thought they might also apnoint subcommittees to represent the various departments of sport. Mr Superintendent Harris had intimated his intention of getting up a torchlight procession if funds were supplied to him. Be might say that the project was receiving very great attention in the other provinces, and if the gentlemen of the committee worked zealously together they could afford a very excellent programme of sports, Ac., to visitors. On the motion of Mr Walton the following gentlemen were appointed as members of the committee: —The Mayor of St. Albans, Messrs D. Thomai, T. D. Condcll, B. C. Bishop, H. IILonghnan and George Harper. Mr Walton said they were going to have a very large influx of visitors here during the Exhibition, and unless some provisos were made for lodgings, &c., they would have people walking about the streets houseless. He would therefore move—“ That in anticipation of ft large in flax of persons here during the Exhibition, an index register ba kept at the office of the City Council, in which the names and addresses of any persons willing to let lodgings, oi hotel keepers, conld be registered, together with the terms required for such lodgings, and that an edvertisement be inserted in the newspapers to that effect.” Mr Ayers seconded the motion. Mr Ollivier opposed the motion in its p 1 esent form. What they wanted was to invite applications from recognised house agents, to whom persons desirous of letting a portion of their premises might go and state their willingness so to do. By this means the comn.ittea would exercise a wholesome supervision over the character of the lodgings pr. ffered to visitors. He should like to see the motion altered so that the names only of the house agents recognised by the committee might be registered Any person desiring accommodation would then come and see the list of house agents recommended by the committee, to whom they might go to procure the lodgings they required. Mr Walton pointed out that th«re were a number of persons who from limited means desired to let lodgings, but who woil l not eo to honse agents, and thus as it were make their poverty public. Mr J. Holmes thought, unless they were n strangers’ reception committee, the motion was quite outside their province. The Mayor said that this naturally grew out of the resolutions of the first meeting. Mr Holmes suggested that on advertisement should be inserted from the committee calling upon those who had lodgings to let to send in their names to the committee, and then appoint someone to inquire into and report upon their respectability. Mr Ollivier pointed out that the committee had no right to attempt to take the bread out of the months of the house agents by depriving them of the small commission they would make.

Mr Leahy agreed with the resolution. The Mayor suggested that the motion might ho amended by inserting the words “or to appoint approved agents to keep a register ” after the words “required for such lodgings.” The motion as amended was carried. Mr Ollivier moved that the following gentlemen form the sub-committee for concert* and music, viz , Dr. Haast, Messrs Sims, R. T. Searell, N. G. Barnett, A. Landergan, Wells. H. H. Loughnan, Izard, A. Lean, and li. Walton, with power to add to their number. Mr Walton seconded the motion. Mr Leahy asked whether the eommiitea would have the regolation of the Oddfellows’ concerts ? The Mayor said that the friendly societies wonld have the sole management of their concerts. Mr Ayers proposed the following gentlemen as sports committee —Messrs A. M. Ollivier, If. Back, E. C. J. Sievens, R. N. Newby, J. T. Matson, Wachsman, Andrews. J. FTebden, E. C. Farr, A. H. Anderson, W. N. Millton, A. 0. Wilson, A. Ayers, W. G. Walker, W. Harris, and T. Searell. Mr Holmes seconded the motion, which was carried. On the motion of Mr Newby, the following gentlemen were elected as a collection commitiw —Messrs J. Ollivier, H- Thomson, G. G. fitend, W. Pratt, Louisson, W. B. Mitchell, P. Cunningham, G. Harper. Mr Ollivier moved that the following gentlemen bo appointed as a committee for lectures, readings, &c.— Professors Hntton, Cook, and Bickerton, Messrs Miller, L. Harper, G. Harper, J. Holmes, E. Dobson, W. Montgomery, and W. Pratt. The names of Messrs A. H. Anderson, W. N. Millton, Neil Black, and T. S. Lambert, were added to the general committse. Mr Walton suggested that his Worship the Mayor be requested to ask the Government to grant free passes over the railway linos to bands and musical societies intending to perform at the Exhibition. The Mayor said he would carry out the suggestion of Mr Walton. The f illowing gentlemen wore appointed as the Friendly Societies committee : Gapes, Woodford, Samuels, Leahy, and nobbo. Mr Walton said ho should like to suggest that Messrs Jonbert and Twopery sbenld be asked to devote a portion of the space in the Exhibition for the purpose of a loan fso lution of works of sn, curios, paintings,. *.? , apart entirely from the mercantile aspect of the case. This might, if carried ont, take off somewhat from the mercantile character cf the Exhibition. Mr Ollivier said that he thought Messrs Jonbert and Twopeny would only be too glad to have so interesting a collection in the Exhibition, which would add considerably to its attractions. Mr Walton pointed out that -here was a picture gallery provided in the building. Mr Lambert said there was stnp'e wall space provided for lean art exhibi.s, pictures, ike., end they would be t ;kon earn of. In reply to Mr Woodford, The Mayor said that so far ns he understood the general committee would recoup any less which might occur on any entertainment which might bo erot cp by the ftic-nd’y societies in cooperation with the general committee. Tho name of Mr Xwopeny was added to the committee. Mr Lambert said that tin concerts, ic., would bo held in the Exhibition building. Mr Woodford understood that some of tho concerts would be held in conjunction with tbs committee in entsido halls.

The meeting then adjourned until March ?tn, at i p.m.
