SPORTING NOTES.

Wo remind intending acceptors that the final Dunodin Oup payments are due to-day (Monday), February 20th. Tomorrow evening aooeptancos for Napier Handioap, Bailway Handicap and Hurdle Handioap must not be overlooked.

Those intending nominating for the Wanganui Autumn Meeting are at the same time reminded that the general entries close on Thursday, FoHruary 23rd, and that nominations for the Oamaru Autumn Moating are duo tc-day week, February 27th. The Taranaki-Carterton raoe committee, on ■winding-up the affairs of the late meeting, -find that they have a balance of between £2O and £35 to carry forward to next year's meeting. The Henderson's Mill Turf Club have issued the programme for their annual meeting, <r> t;iki> place on March 17th. It is a most attractive one, and is as follows : Maiden Piute, of 25sovs; Hurdle Bace, of 40jots ; HeEdorson's Mill Cap, of lOOsovs ; Selling Bace, of 30aovs ; Railway Handioap, of 30sovs; and Consolation Handioap, of 15iots. Nominations for Henderson's Mill Cup and Hurdle Bace close on February 25th. Much nurpriae is expressed in Auckland owing to tho absence of entries by the Middle Park Stud Company in the Auckland Derby of 1834 . O'Brien has, we hear, parted with old Fishhook to Mr J. Osborne.

The weights allottod Goodman's horses at Wairarapa aro a caution. Tho handioappcr—whoever that gentleman may be —appears determined that the Southerners shall not run away from tho cattle opposed to him. Sir Modred, it will be seen, on referring to tho handioaps appearing further on, heads Jthe list in the three principal events, and is asked to carry the crusher of 12st 41b in the Oup of two miles! By Gemini, how_ long will they take to oover the distanoo if this impost is to bring the lot together ? A telegram to a Wellington paper on February Hth, saya that Bay's Annie is being baoked to win the Wairarapa Oup at the short price of 4 to 1 ; 25 to 3 against Waitangi and Annie for the Cup and District Handicap, and the same against Orphan and Waitangi, are also offer d.

A kind offer of a seat in a buggy to the racecourse to view the work on Tuesday morning wm one not to be refused. Shortly after the clock striking five saw us on the road, and n half-hour's enjoyable drive in the oooi freßh air, behind a free moving little iron-grey, brought ui to the deciding ground of many a hard fought contest. Driving up to the stand, we were very much pleased with the beautiful fresh, green look of the course proper and the lawn in front of the grand aland. Though the latter was not luid down in graas until very late, the showers of the last month have brought it on wonderfully, acd the whole of the plot facing the building is now a beautiful green. The hour of starting (proposed over night) proved too late to witness the roal event of the morning. Outts' two Dunedin Cup candidates, Dauphin and Ohanoellor, had already gone through their work, as also Lunn'a pair, Welcome Jaok and Bluoboy, the latter two having gone twice round steady. We were in time, however, to witness O'Brien's Tasman and Troubadour, the latter, over hurdles, going at a Bmart paoe, the Tasmanian moving froely and well. These were followed by Sam Higgott's ohesnufc fonr-year-old, a daughter of Anteros, out of Pungawerewere'e dam Atalanta, going twice round, picking up half-way a two-y oar-old oolt by Javolin out of Flattery. The latter is, so far as we oould see, a remarkably woll grown youngster, and looked a nico mover. Ho will, unless we are greatly mistaken, be heard of some day. Mataku now came out, and cantered twice round. Ee was followed by the Anteros —Gossip three-year-old gelding over hurdlcn, who appeared, howevor, hardly yot tip to his tusk. Next came a surprise in the ihape of our old friend Hornbypropping along in hid own peculiar style. The past season's Stud work appears to have benefitted, this son of Songster and Toi-toi, who now appeared to go. sound enough. There were numerous others out doing walking exercise, among whom I was introduced to a very nice threeyoa/old colt by Tubal Gain, out of Aoe of Hearts, bred by Mr Sam. Gardner, of Victoria, and now the property of Mr Lee, of Oxford. This colt looks all over a galloper, and should all go well will take a smart one to beat him in his maiden race at Dunedin this week. Seeing no likelihood of witnessing any further work, we made our way back to town.

The impending Dunedin meeting this -week promises in every reapeofc to be a oapital and Terr interesting meeting. Sport will commtnoe with the Hurdle Handicap, for which there will most likely be a good field. For this event Clarence's ohanoe appears the boot-, and we ahull go for him straight out. Tho Champagne Stakes has eleven left; in to eeleot from. Siesta for this event is euro, from her spring performance, to become a prominent favorite, and judging her from her Welcome Stakes performance, we seo"nothing to beat her at weight for age. Nonsense and Turquoise we select for places. Mary of the Cap candidates, we greatly fear, will fail to meet the final payment, but we have vary little doubt a good field (perhaps eight or ten) will sport silk. Of tho probable starters, however, we like the chance best of Dauphin, Libeller, Chancellor, The Poet and Siu'man, as nearly as possible in the order named, although Mataku or Ludy Emma possibly may upset our calculations. Of Mata's half brother, so very little is known, that it is very hazardous to le.ive him out altogether. That he is a good colt we feel certain, but bin feet are not all they should be/and have troubled him throughout the whole of his training career ; but for that we believe he would have held (he Dauphin safe in the Derby. There are many things then more unlikely than the peculiar marked faced son of Maroro being the firot past the winnirg post; although, owing to his misfortune, we pass him by in favor of his stable companion. The Selling ll.ioo of i'va entries appears to be a very open event, but knowing very little of tho candidates, excepting Laertes, will not venture to prediot the winner. SL'he Maiden Plate of eleven entries promises another good field. Oar selection for this ©vent is the Tubal Cain—Ace of Hearts colt, bis most dangerous opponents Gitana or Atua. Billingsgate should hold his owa over his favorite distance in the Tramway Plate, unless a fljor turns up in one of the three-yoar-olds or the Welcome winner, Siesta. We are of opinion, however, that the son of Isaao Walton will retain bis well earned reputation of being the champion sprinter of the colony. Of those not engaged in the Cup and entered for the Publicans' Handicap, we prefer the ehanoes of Nautilus, or, if saved for the shorter race, Hilda. There will most probably be numerous soratohings for this raoe from among the Cup horses. The Queen's Plate, rim, ire think, on the third day, ie a long distance weight-for-ago race of two miles. Ot the nine entries for this race, The Poet, Teaman, and Mataku, look the most promising from which to make a selection, and the finish in the order named will not, we think, be far wrong when it is all over. Talent has (tone lame, so is an unlikely ■tarter for his Dunedin engagements. WAIBARAPA JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAPS.
