ELECTION OE LICENSING COMMITTEES.
EABT OHBIBTOHUOH. The polling for the election of the Licensing Commissioners for the Bast Ohristchuroh Licensing distriot took place on Saturday at the Orange Hall, Worcester street. As was tho oase in the North Ohristchurch distriot on the previous day, but little interest was manifested. The candidates nominated were Messrs Cunningham, Westenra, Pritchard, Harman, Parker, and Archdeacon Harris. Shortly after six o'olook, the Returning Officer affixed a placard on the door of the ball, announcing the numbers polled for the various candidates as under : Cunningham, P 61 Westenra, B 59 Harman, B J. S 58 Pritchard, O. A 68 Parker, J. E 49 Hanis, W. C. 17 The first five named are consequently declared elected. EYBETON. On Saturday, Messrs B. Coup, M. B. Hiatt, Isaao Wilson, J. Lowthian Wilson, ted. Ft. M. Wright were nominated and dec KPffli elected members of the Licensing Ooiumitee for this distriot. There was very little interest shown in the proceedings, as the only ratepayers of the district present at the nomination happened to be Mr Whitefoord, the returning offioer, who, of course, could take no cart in tho proceedings beyond the scope of his official duties. A new theatre is in course of erection at Bournemouth. The manager ia Mr H. Nash, who during the past six years has introduced to Bournemouth many of the principal dramatic and operatio companies on tour. Mr Edwin Booth returned to England early this year, and will fulfill several engagements in London and the provinces. Afterwards he will go to Germs ny, where he also has some profitable engagements. The Ohariug Cross Theatre, under its new name of " Toole's Theatre," reopened in the latter part of January, when Mr Toole completed his long round of provincial engagements. Miss Emma Stanley, an accomplished and versatile arliit, whose performances in an entertainment entitled " The Seven Ages of Woman" were very popular, has recently died. Jeannie Winston has been appearing at Boston, U.S., with much sucoess in a new comic opera by Edward J. Darling, entitled "The Twelve Jolly Bachelors." Emile Melville is a far greater favorite in Boston as an opera bouffd artiste thim her predecessor, Ada Pearl. Edwin Booth's first fourteen nights' work in New York during bis recent season there returned him 12,000 dollars (£2400). He makes a tour of the English provinces this summer, and then goes to Germany.
