THE VOLUNTEERS.

DIBTBIOT PBIZB FIEING. The district prize firing for Canterbury commenced on Thursday at Temuka, and finished yesterday. The competitors representing the Temuka Bifles and Christchurch City Guards were under command of Major Lean. The locality of Temuka was selected in consequence of there being no range available nearer to Christchurch suitable to the longer distances. The Christchurch men thus being unable to have any practice, were placed somewhat at a disadvantage. The following were the scores made : 400 500 600

It was arranged that the scores of the first seven of the Temuka representatives taken in the order of firing should be matched against the seven of the City Guards, and the result was—City Guards, 237 points; Temuka Rifles, 213 ; the City Guards thus winning by 24 points.
