Committed for Trial. Alexander Johnston, alias Adam Johnston, was this morning, at the Resident Magistrate's Court, committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court on a charge of forging a cheque for £2 and uttering ths same on E. A. Garnett, hairdresser, Cashel street, Chris tohurcb.
Lyttelon Licensing Committee.—The following nominations were made to-day B. Forbes, C. H. Elmes, J. Wilfred Smith, Thomas McDonald, George Ayers, W. Raid, J. G. Pyfe, S. E. Webb, A. Chalmers, A. Joyce. The eleotioa will take place at the Lyttelton Borough Council offices next Wednesday, when every ratepayer is entitled to vote. Five members are to be returned.
Accident at Lyttelton.—A married man named J. Bethkie, residing in Winchester street, was going in for atbie.ics with some of his mates on Norwich Quay when he fell and broke bis leg between the knee and ankle joint. He was taken homo and attended by Drs. Bouse and Macdonald.
£s*aiora Accident.—An accident of a very serious nature, and one which B>t is feared will prove fatal, happened this morni ig to a man named Carr, one of the stonemasons employed in building the new lecture bail now being attached to the Canterbury College. • At the time of the accident, Carr was engaged in assisting to shift some timber, when he slipped and fell from the scaffolding, his head coming in violent contact with a large block of stone. The unfortunate man was immediately taken to the Hospital, where, upon medical examination, it was found that ha had sustained a severe fracture of the skull and other injuries of a serious nature. Carr was oce of the men engaged in building the Cathedral tower and spire. North Canterbury Caledonian Society. —ln addition to the special prizes noted in Saturday's issue as having been placed at the disposal of this society for its annual gathering, Messrs E. Wilkin and Co, give £5 6s and Mr TJrquhart, silversmith, gives a silver medal for competition.
Gladstone Election. —lt was stated ia the Election Petitions Court yesterday that the petition against the return of Captain Sutter for Gladstone had been withdrawn. The Court will probably sit at an early date to formally dispose of the application for withdrawal. An Interesting Case.— lt is announced by telegram from Wellington that Mr Hunt, late Chief Secretary for Samoa, has issued a writ against Sir Arthur Gordon, as High Commissioner of the Pacific, for the recovery of £6030 compensation for alleged assault and false imprisonment. A strong bar has been retained on each side, and the case is litoly to mark an epoch in the judicial history of the colony. Inquest. —An inquest was held at the Southbridge Hotel on Tuesday, before Mr B. B. Willis, coroner, and a jury, of which Mr Harbottle was chosen foreman, on the body of Prank Grocsman, who had died on Mr Laoky’s farm, near Southbridge, on the previous day. Dr. Malone stated that deceased had died from fatty degeneration of the heart, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly.
Txnwald Pacing Club. A meeting was held on Saturday in Scott’s Hotel (Mr Chichester in the chair), Mr J. Clark was elected president, Mr D. McLean vice-president, Mr M. Stitt judge of horse races; Mr Simpson, starter; Mr Chichester, clerk of scales ; Mr J. O. Bell, clerk of the course; Mr Biggs, treasurer ; and Mr Jephson, secretary. Woodbnd Domain Board. The [first meeting of this Board was held on Monday. Present —Messrs E. J. Pateman, P. Horrell, J. Oatchpole, and B. S. Turner. It was unanimously resolved that Mr Pateman bo
elected chairman. The Board decided to take steps towards letting the reserve of 334 acres, and at next meeting to consider the question of improving the six acres and half in the township which is placed in its custody. Accidents. — Yesterday afternoon, whilst
a man named James Barnett, who was carting sugar for Messrs Wood, Shand and 00., was lifting two bags of sugar, the horse moved a step or so, causing the man to fall off the dray. He was bruised considerably, and at once removed to the Hospital, where he received every attention. A man named Albert Ashley was also admitted into the Hospital yesterday, having fractured his left leg, said to have been done whilst he was playing at skittles. The limb was set, and ho s doing as well as possible. The Accident at Southbbidgb.—We are sorry to state that the late accident has been attended with more serious results than was at first anticipated, the little baby’s hip having been found to be dislocated. The boy who bad his scull fractured died at 7.30 a.m. yesterday morning. The other sufftrars are progressing as well as can bo expected under the circumstances, Drs. Chapman and Irvine having been unremitting in their attention. “3 he Tablet." —A crowded meeting of the shareholders of the “ Tablet " Company was held on Monday evening, says the “Daily Times,” and there was a warm debate over the proposal to transfer the concern to Bishop Moran. The whole of the shareholders present (with one exception) were opposed to the proposal, and letters were read from a number of shareholders in the country also disapproving of it. Under these circumstances the Rev. Father Walsh withdrew the proposal, and the meeting agreed to continue the piaper as at present under the management of the directors, to whom a vote of thanks was tendered. The shareholders passed a resolu-
tion authorising the directors to hand over £2OO to Bishop Moran, in recognition of the services rendered by him to the “Tablet"' newspaper.
Exhibition Committer. —At a meeting of the Industrial Association committee, held last night, a motion stfnding over from a previous meeting, by which Mr Kelsey proposed to defray the expenses of the Exhibition committee, such as printing, stationery, &s., out of the funds ot the association, was negatived without dissent. It was the opinion of the meeting that those expenses should be defrayed by the gentlemen themselves who composed the committee. Aton Road Boabd. —The Board met on February 13th. Present—The chairman, Messrs Munro and Cooper. The clerk's report was read and considered. A letter was received from the Mayor of St. Albans, requesting an advance of £250 from the Road Board to the Borough Council on account of whatever sum may bo hereafter awarded as their assets, undertaking to refund whatever amount should be then deemed in excess ot their due. Resolved, that the request be granted. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary, requiring the reoommendotion of a suitable person to act as returning officer at the ensning election of the Boad Board, and a convenient building for a poll-ng-plaoe. The chairman stated that he had already forwarded a reply. A letter was roeived from the engineer to Drainage Board stating that it was the intention of the Drainage Board to widen the drain crossing Winter’s road, and wishing to know what width the bridge should be made. Resolved, that it bo made the full width of the road. The clerk was instructed to write to the manager of the Tramway Company, drawing his attention to the dangerous condition of the Papanui road above Norman’s lane, and requesting that immediate steps be taken to put it in proper repair. Also, that complaints bad been made about traznears being left on the road at Papanui for an unreasonable length ot time without attendance. Resolved—- “ That tenders be invited for shingling part of Hawkin’s road.” Resolved —“That from the present date the day labor men bo paid the uniform rate of 7i per day." Accounts amounting to £36 16i lOd were then passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
