[Per 8.8. Arawata, at the Bluff.] MELBOURNE, February 8. The rumors as to the translations of some of the colonial Governors has been authoritatively denied.
In Geelong bay three young men in a boat were caught in a sudden squall, and two were drowned.
The Government hare received a telegram from the Agent-General stating that arrangements to despatch the mails from Melbourne were approved by the Treasury. During monsoon months, on Tuesdays at daybreak ; ordinary months, on Thursdays at noon. Harvest is nearly completed, and is generally satisfactory. Very hot weather has been experienced, and the absence of rain is beginni g to be felt in the country districts. A conference of school inspectors has fixed the minimum sohool age for pupils in the State schools at four and a-half years. The new Border Treaty between Victoria and South Australia has been received and duly signed, and an official has been appointed to carry out the arrangements.
The Education Commission have now commenced to take evidence of the first witness, Wilson Bunn, secretary of the department. The report of Dr. Lyttelton shows that seven passengers and the stewards of the Mirzipore are suffering from small pox. None of the cases exhibited dangerous symptoms. A case of supposed small pox was reported yesterday at Geelong, but as yet is unconfirmed. The Customs have made further extensive seizures of cigars in Melbourne from tobacoonists, and all were traced to the Chinaman who was recently arrested for smuggling. A series of rowing and sailing matches in Hobson's Bay will take place on Saturday next, when the Russian men-of-war crows will tike part. SYDNE7, February 8. Mr Walter Adams, of Blayney, was knocked down by a train at Newton on Monday night. He suffered fearful injuries, and died a few hours later. All the email pox patients in the quarantine ground are doing well. It is expected that the requisite funds to enable Trickott to meet Hanlon will be raised by subscription. The seas are breaking completely over the Fiona, and it is not expected that she can hold together much longer.
