The former have been defeated at Gatohko, a town about fifty miles south-east of Mostar, the capital of the province. The German police have seized all the copies of the London "Punch" that ware offered for sale in Berlin, on account of the caricatures whioh have reoently appeared in it. They consider that their tendenoy was to bring the Government into contempt and ridicule. The Bussian Government recently mide arrangements for having the census talen throughout the empire. The inhabitants of Dunaburg, a town in the provirce of Witespk, strongly objeoted to furnish the information required, and on the officitls endeavouring to oompel them, they offered a decided resistance, which culminated in a serious riot. A conspiracy has been discovered at Cabul, the object of whioh was to dethrone Abdul Rahman, the Ameer, and restore Ayoub Khan. A number of persons implicated ia the oonspiraoy have been arrested. The Turcomans at Merv have made a raid upon Meshed, a large fortified town in the provinoe of Kholasan, near the north-east frontier of Persia. Beveral adjoining towns were also pillaged, and 30,000 sheep were carried away. A collision took place in the Suez Canal between two steamers, both of whioh were considerably damaged. An engineer was killed. It is rumored in European political circles that grave complications among the Great Powers are impending, and that war is likely to break out in the ensuing spring. Austria is said to be making great warlike preparations, and hostilities between that power and Italy are believed to be imminent. General Logerot having departed with the Frenoh troops whioh recently ocoupied Gabes, a seaport town in South Tunis, a large body of insurgent Arabs has attacked the town, and the situation is considered critical. The Socialists have lately been displaying considerable activity in Austria. A number have been arrested at Brunn, the ohief town of Moravia, and other arrests are expected to follow. A terrible explosion has occurred at a dynamite faotory at Port Vendres, a seaport town in the department of the Pyrenees Orientales, South of France. The factory'was completely wrecked and sixteen persons were killed. A number of fires have lately occurred in Ohioago, causing great destruction of property, and quite a panic has been caused among the inhabitants, who attribute them to the work of inoendiaries. Public feeling in the United States against the practice of polygamy by the Mormans is growing stronger, and a bill for its suppression has been introduced into Congress. The Austrian Government is incensed at the publication by the Vienna journals of the recent defeat inflicted on the Austrian troops at Gatchko, in Herzegovina, at the hands of the insurgents, and has issued a 'manifesto prohibiting under heavy penalties the publication by the Vienna press of the operations of the troops engaged against the insurgents. Ever since the insurrection broke out severe striotures have been passed by the Vienna newspapers for the manner in which the troops engaged in Herzgovina have been handled, and the prohibition just issued has not been unexpected. At a meeting of the London Chamber of Commeroe there was a long and important discussion on the trade between England and the Australian colonies. High eulogies were passed upon the latter by several speakers, who dwelt upon the magnitude and importance of colonial trade and the probability of its indefinite inorease. Mr Crowe, an Irish American, who has taken a prominent part in advising the use of dynamite for the destruction of the British shipping and other property has arrived in Paris. The renewed negotiations for a commercial treaty with France are likely to fall through. The Frenoh Government refuses to make any further reductions on the duties of English goods imported into France. ' These were considered insufficient by the British Government, and it is expeoted that no arrangement will cow be arrived at. The Bussian military authorites in Turkestan consider that there is no immediate danger of hostilities with the Turcomans at Merv. They have, therefore, decided to rednoe the number of troops at present occupying the fortress at Aekhabad. General '.Oaribaldi, who has been in a bad state of health for some time past, is worse. He is now lying at Naples in a critical state, and his medical advisers give no hopes of his reoovery. A train passing over a bridge on the Midland Bailway, near Manchester, had a narrow escape from total destruction. The bridge collapsed just after the train had passed over it. A few days ago the Austrian Government issued an order forbidding the publication by the Press of the movements of the troops engaged in Herzgovina. Several papers in Vienna having, however, continued to do so, they were summarily seized, and their machinery {confiscated.
