SPOHXINQ- NOTES, The suggestion made by Mr Beeves of instituting a one or two days’ raoe meeting on New Year’s Day will have the support and appreciation of the Southern sportsmen and publio generally. There can be very little doubt but what with the railway and totaliiator proceeds, the venture, if not at onoe, soon will become a profitable one to the club. Were they to purchase and work their own instrument, the desired result would soon be effected. The club’s funds now derived from the totalisators would then nearly be doubled, half of which, for the sake of an outlay of say £3OO, now goes into the pockets of private individuals. We feel confident the savingeffected in one meeting, were this judiciously carried out, would clear the cost of three or four instruments. Our Auckland friends will no doubt demur on our fixing a date that will clash with their great summer meeting. It will for a few years do them a certain amount of harm. As to ourselves, their meeting coming on the same date will mak* little or no difference. Mr Walters is about the only sportsman in the North Island who hitherto has had the enterprise of contesting the events of the Southern raoe meetings, and if only the stakes are good, be will no doubt have a representative or two at our midsummer meeting. With the increase that is taking place in brood marcs, both ooloniap and imported, and with a few more large racing stud? such as will shortly be found at Rueatey, there aaii be no Isas? but plenty ot horses will be found to contest all the public? money that is likely to be raised both North and South, and the more money there is th* more stock will be bred. We therefore trust that the 0.J.0. will see their way to giro ua next New Tear’s Day a supplementary meeting. In point of numbers, the Taranaki events have filled very satisfactorily. We should say, however, that the bandicapper will have a difficult task to bring such a heterogeneous, lot together. The Poverty Bay Turf Club weights, declared on January 28th, appear elsewhere. The Slander filly and Tim Whiffler both look remarkably well on paper, with their respective weights in the Tradesmen’s Handicap and Tauranga Stakes ; as also the top weight, Lonehand, in the Hurdles. Should the latter be in the humor he will have little difficulty in disposing of his opponents. We think the pick of the Grey month Jockey Club Handicap is Bore, who, under a light weight, is anything bat a bad mare. She is a six-year.old daughter of Totara out of Corona, by Towlon out of Old Princess. Very little fault, therefore, can be found in her pedigree, and with only 7st 121 b up she should make it merry for the field. Mr Bitchie had a good throw in at th* Ohatham Island races, with the help of Island. Hose, a three-year-old daughter of Daniel O'Bourke, dam Bed Bose, by winning the principal flat raoe events, including the Cap. This race Sea Devil won the two previous years, but was last year run very close, carrying the same weight he did this year, by the filly, then a two-year-old, with 9st 101 b up. Island Bose was bred by the Middle Park Stud Company, and as a yearling was purchased by her present owner. Cleopatra, also belonging to Mr Bitchie, repeated her performance of last year in winning the Champion Hurdle Bace, as also did Arab in the Ladies’ Purse. We understand that Mr Stead has made an extensive addition in the acreage of his stud farm at Bussley by the purchase from Captain Templar of that gentleman’s farm of 255 acres, at the price of £3O per acre. The land is very good and almost adjoins Bussley. Marlborough general entries close on Wednesday, February Bth. The match between Beer Tax and Levant, which was to have taken place last Tuesday, fell through, Mr Piper, the owner of Levant, forfeiting his deposit. The nominations for the Auckland Derby, 1884, telegraphed this week, number thirtyseven. Musket, as a sire, is a long way to the fore in point of number, his gets totaling up to sixteen ; Feve, another English-bred horse, comes next with five ; followed by Kingfisher (we presume, the son of Dainty Ariel) with three; Hero, Albany, King Colo (Australian), and Yattendon (Australian) with two each; while Totara, Korari, Doncaster (English), Scottish Chief (English), and the Traduoer number only one each. The chances, therefore, are a long way in favor of a eon or daughter of Musket pulling off the Auckland blue ribbon of 1884. The Turakina Jockey Club have issued the following programme, to be run on March 2nd —Handicap Hurdle Bace, of 40 sovs,. Hack Hurdle Bace of 10 sovs., Maiden Plate of 40 sovs., Turakina Handicap of 100 sovs.. Sapling Stakes of 25 sovs., District Handicap of 40 sovs., Forced Handicap of 15 sovs. The stakes in all total up to £270. A match for £SO a-side has been arranged between Messrs J. Dnrie and Alf. Birohall, to run their two-year-olds, Bally and Maid of Eocleston, both by The Painter, five furlongs. This match is the outcome of the late Bangitikei Sapling Stakes, which was won by Bally. The event will be decided on the Wanganui racecourse in about four weeks' time. A singular accident has befallen one of the most prominent candidates for the Wanganui Blue Bibbon. Some weeks ago, says a local paper, Mr Heslop’s bay three-year-old gelding Logic (by Papapa out of Mishap), which was in training for the next Derby, strayed out of a paddock at Waitotara. Mr Hesiop caused inquiries to be made, but no trace of the animal could be found. One day last week Mr Hesiop came to town, and when crossing the street to hand in an advertisement offering a reward for any information regarding the horse, happened to glance over at the cab-stand. His surprise may be imagined, when he saw his thoroughbred gelding standing quietly harnessed to a cab in the rank*. Mr Hesiop could hardly believe his eyes, but a closer examination showed him. that the horse was his beyond a doubt. On making inquiries he found that the gelding had been t ound wandering in the street* and impounded. He was advertised in th* papers, but one distinguishing brand on th* cheek was not mentioned. As the horse was not claimed he was sold in the usual course, and purchased by the cab-driver for £7. Th* latter, it would appear, recognised tim value of his bargain, and the horse being quiet and tractable was at onoe put to cab work. A*, the sale was a perfectly legal one, and th* purchaser declines to part with the animal, Mr Hesiop is a heavy loser. We may mention, that Logic's chances for the Derby were considered very good, and he had rapidly risen in. the betting market, v £
