At a meeting of tbs Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners a resolution was parsed expressing sympathy with and promising support to the Union Sash and Door employes who have been looked out. Reprelentativos of the Bricklayers’ Society and of the Auckland Timber and Sawmill Company’s men-endorsed the resolution, and stated that the men with whom they were associated, as well as those connected with the building trades, would assist them. The speaker* expressed their belief that the new proposals for extended hours were intended to break down the eight hours’ system now established for nearly twenty years in tho province in the building and sister trades. Aquatic. Floyd has received a letter from Mes. •anger, an Australian oarsman, notifying that he is coming to arrange a match with Hearn, if possible. He telegraphed to Hearn on the subject. Messenger has some idea of settling in New Zealand and of following his calling of boatbuilding in this colony. NAPIER, February 3. Tarf Scandal. The general meeting of the Race Club held last night, after a very long discussion, unanimously endorsed the decision of the stewards disqualifying Mortagb. It was also resolved— 41 That the names of Richard Barrows and Joseph Leonard be erased from the roll of stewards, committeemen and members of the Oiub.” Murtogh accused Barrows of bribing him to sell the Hnrdles at the last Racing Club Meeting. He says money was thrust into his pocket by Barrow*, and he retained it in order that be might tell the stewards of the affair. He won the race with Angler after a dead heat. Ha stated that when Barrows made the offer, he said it was on behalf of himself and Leonard, but there was no evidence directly implicating Leonard, but as he was known to have laid odds against Angler (who was tho favorite), the club apparently concluded that he had some knowledge of the affair. Barrows absolutely denies Murtagh’s statement, and alleges that it is made out of revenge for private differences between them relating to money matters. Leonard also denies everything. Jones, the rider of A. G., owned by Hislop, one of the stewards, states that Murtagb offered to lose if he would give him £5, as he wished to run the weight off bis horse. Leonard wished the proceedings to be public, but, as legal proceedings may ensue, the meeting declined to admit reporters. Several actions are talked about. Mnrtagh’s disqualification by the Jockey Club is now sure to ensue. He advertises ail his horses for sale, and intends to leave the district. Scholastic^ The committee of the Education Board and the trustees of the High School are conferring with the object of introducing a Bill in Parliament to amalgamate the present High School endowments (which were purchased from the funds publicly subscribed in town) with the secondary education reserves, so that the Girls’ High School may be built, and the Boys’ School improved. Transport of Cattle. Large mobu of sheep and cattle continue to leave Hawke’s Boy for the Wellington and Auckland markets. Stock is now getting scarce and rising in price. The exports from Hawke’s Bay last year, excluding considerable quantities of wool sent coastwise, were over £600,000, or about £3l per head for tho population, this being the largest proportion in the colony. The directors of the National Insurance Company have decided to strengthen their institution by issuing another 100,000 shares, and will offer the same to the present shareholders at 25s each under easy calls. A special meeting of the Executive Council was held to-day, his Excellency the Governor presiding. Messrs Atkinson, Bryce, Dick, and Johnston were present. It was decided to further prorogue Parliament to tho 4th of April, and the prorogation was signed accordingly. Parliament ia not, however, to meet then for the despatch of business, but another prorogation will take place to the middle of May, when the session will definitely commence, unless any unforsoen impediment should intervene. I understand that it Las been finally determined that the Royal Commission for dealing with the Volunteer claims shall consist of Messrs Henry Bunny (late M.H.R, for Wairarapa), J. Fulton (M.H.R. for the Taieri), and T. Mockay (late Deputy Property Tax Commissioner at Nelson). 1 hear, also, that tho appointments will bo made immediately, and that the Commission will commence work forthwith. It is expected (hat their labours will occupy some months. Mr Rolleston returned to Wellington today.
