NORTH RAKAIA BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.
A meeting was held at Sonthbridge on Monday, 30th January, 1882. Present—Mr 3. B. Campbell (in the ohair), Messrs B. J. Lee, W. Bishop, and Job Osborne. The Secretary reported that the receipts since the previous meeting were as follows : Bent account, £4O 14); rate account, £l6 ; Bank overdraft, £54 Os lid. Correspondence was read from C. Hurst, Esq., offering to give the whole of the frontage to the Bahaia, between the plantation boundary on reserve 1376 and section 34218, with a sufficient depth to contain an area equal to that of the reserve proposed to be exchanged. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Osborne, seconded by Mr Lee—“ Teat the exchange proposed by Mr Hurst be carried into effect, provided that Mr Hurst gives an equivalent value of land, such value to be decided by arbitration in the usual manner, and all expenses connected with such exchange to be borne by Mr Hurst.” From Mr Allan, with an amended offer (or the transfer of bis lease of certain reserves in the river bed to the New Zealand and Australian Land Company. Accepted.—The Secretary stated that the manager of the Heslerton Bun had applied for the Board to level two or three chains of earthwork intersecting B. 8. 3417. To be informed that the work had been constructed with the assent of the original occupier, and that the Board were much opposed to granting this request. That the Bank were willing to allow the Board an overdraft until such times as the rates were collected, at current rates.—The rate-book, as prepared by the secretary, was accepted, and officially signed by three members of the Board, and a rate of sixpence in the pound, in accordance with advertised notice, duly struck and ordered to bo collected.—ln respect to the river works, the secretary reported as follows :—Several yards of the river bank below Knyvett’a had been washed away during the past fourteen days. The original breach had been stopped, but fresh gaps had been made in the old embankment, lower down the stream, and it was feared that the river would be right up to the new embankment before any groins could be constructed to protect the face, so that the foreman intended constructing another earthwork a few chains to the rear of the present one at once. At Brawley’s, also, it was necessary to make some repairs to the groins, as, owing partly to neglect, and partly to the continuous flood, the river threatened to get behind several and do considerable damage. Unfortunately, what with rain and north-westers, vary little work had been done, and although plenty of hands were to be got the greatest difficulty is' experienced in obtaining drays for gorse carting. As soon, however, as'the rush of the harvest is over, this will probably be obviated. Mr William White had already been up to the works twice, and promised to come up again. Mr Campbell, Mr Story, and some others had carted a few loads of timber on to the works gratuitously.—The question of ratepayers owning property within a certain radius being called upon to specially contribute towards the works now in course of construction to. protect one of the most dangerous leads into Stony gully was discussed, and Mr Lee tabled the following notice of motion, to be brought forward at the next meeting :—“ That a: special rate be struck and levied on all the property within a certain radius, to be determined in the usual manner, which would be directly affected by the present threatened | overflow from the Bakaia immediately below; Knyvett’s gums.”
Sign painters should know that their merchants desire to keep an unvarnished, name. A party who has been unfortunate in stocks says he believes if be should buy a balloon it! would not go up.
