CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

A meeting of the Board of Governors cf Canterbury College was held yesterday. The report of the library committee was read, giving a history of the transfer of tho public library from the trustees of the Christchurch Literary Institute and superintendent to the Board of Governors. Dr. Turnbull resumed the discus-ion re the public library, and gave every credit to the department for tho careful statement just read, but, in tho absence of the accounts, would prefer that discussion cf the question be deferred till tho next monthly meeting of the Board.

On the motion of the Rev. O. Fraser, it was resolved that the further consideration of the question be deferred till the usxt monthly meeting. Dr. Turnbull then moved—“ That five subscribers be added to the library committee for the selection of books.” After some discussion the motion was negatived. The Board then went into committee to consider the College committee’s report, and on resuming it was announced that the following recommendations of committee had been agreed to :—The committee recommends that the Shakespeare prize of £2O, given by the chairman (W. Montgomery, Eeq), ha divided between Edith Searle and Joseph P. Grossman. The committee recommends the Board to authorise the committee to accept a tender for lining the eastern wall of the now hall wi f h stone instead of plaster. The committee recommends the Board that a fee of twenty guineas be paid each of tho commissioners who selected the masters for tho Boys* High School. That the Board authorise tho committee to make additions to the teaching power of the Boys’ High School. Sundry alterations in tho rules governing the reference library were also agreed to in committee. It was announced that certain discretionary powers had been granted to the director of the Agricultural College. The Board then adjourned. KOTICB OP MOTIOH. Dr. Turnbull to move at next meeting—- “ That returns be made for the next ordinary meeting—l. The position and nature of reserve under Museum, Library, and Technical School of Science Ordinance, 1878. 2. The annual income derived from tho reserve since its establishment. 3. A return showing the expenditure upon eaoh institution.”
