A brigantine from iho North was signalled when our express loft port to day. Tbo s.s. Westport arrived from Timaru yesterday vritu another load cf wool, for transhipment to tho Helen Scott. Tho Island Lily arrived hsuce at the Chathams on the 9th instant. She left hero on the 6ch. The Union Steamship Company’s s.s. Hawea arrived at 5.50 a m. on Saturday from Wellington and North Island West Const ports. From leaving Wellington a violent N.W, gale was experienced, and across the Straits tbo steamer did her sixteen knots for a couple of hours or bo. After crossing the Straits tho wind died away, and so kept calm tip to arrival. The steamer left for the North at 9.30 p m. The brigantine Omaha, Captain Meikloham, arrived yesterday afternoon from the Chatham Islands with a cargo of wool, and bringing a number cf passengers. She left the islands on tho 2,at inst., and was off tho Peninsula last Friday ra-ruing, but not surprisingly got blown away by the heavy N.W. squalls. Some inquiries have teen made as to what had become of the Omaha as her arrival hero was looked for some weeks since. Her nor-appoarance is now accounted for by the fact that she was going from place to place about the_ islands picking np her cargo, a proceeding tb,at in place of occupying but a Cow days, toofe'feix wests to perform, owing to the exceptionally bad weather and heavy unfavorable winds prevailing. Capt. Maikleham reports making a good ran down from here last trio, tbo passage occupying but three days and a few hours. THE SYDENHAM. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s chartered ba - qna Sydenham, Captain Miller, anchored at 8 am. to-day from London. Sh.i loft them on October 29th, and brought fifteen passengers, ail of whom arrived in good health. THE ASTEROID. The schooner yacht Asteroid, daily expected here on ho journey round the world on a pleasure excursion, is at present at Dunedin. The following particu'ara of her and of her movements taken from an exchange may bo found of interest:—The Asteroid is a very handsomely modelled and perfectly equipped vessel of 92 tons register. Sho was built at Cowes, Isle cf Wight, by Messrs O. Hansen and Sons, in 1831), and is under tho flag of the Royal Mersey Yacht Club. She has been cut from England about eighteen months, and has visited the several Mediterranean porta, passed through tho Suez Canal, and called at tho island of Ceylon, the Malay Peninsula, and Java, passing through tho Straits tf Sunda to King George’s Sound ; and after calling at Adelaida, Melbourne. Sydney, and Hobart, left the latter port on December 31st, clearing D’Entrecasteaux Channel on January sth; experienced fresh to light westerly winds across to New Zealand, and entered Milford Sound on January 12th, anchoring in the Freshwater Basin ; left again on the 16th inst., experienced strong westerly weather with heavy rains, and arrived at Dunedin on the 18ih inst. Captain Burton intends visiting the Northern parts of New Zealand, and thence proceeding to tho Western Pacific. Her passengers are Messrs A. Deacon and T. A. N. Littledale.
