DELIBERATE ATTEMPT AT INCENDIARISM.

I PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.J DUNEDIN, January 27. Further particulars are to hand_ respecting the Queenstown fire, for causing which Waldamann, a baker, in whose shop it originated, is in custody. He owned a cottage in the outskirts of the town, and the police, Accompanied by agents of insurance companies, visited this, surmising that some of the goods from tho store might have been removed there, os Waldemann had been heard by tho neighbors hard at work all tho previous night to the fire. The sergeant and his company arrived at tho cottage iust in time to prevent another conflagration. They found tho doors and »nd windows well secured, The sergeant, however, effected an entry by a back window, but found a sheet of corrugated iron nailed over tho inside. Nothing was found in this room, and the next one entered presented nothing suspicious, but the reflection of a burning candle attracted their attention in the third room, and upon inspection they saw the floor saturated with kerosene and tar. A great quantity of matches were scattered all over some brushwood, in the midst of which was fixed a burning candle, several of which had been stuck together so as to last the deaired time. Tho candle when discovered had burned down to within an inch of the brushwood and matches. The flare of the candle was carefully shaded by three sheets of iron, in addition to which the windows of the room were nailed up with sheets of corrugated iron placed on the inside over the curtains and blinds, the whole arrangements disclosing one of the most’clelibarato attempts at incendiarism imaginable.
