Indecency. —David Wilson and Johanna Gallagher were charged with having committed an act of indecency in a public place. Wilson was fined £l, or, in default, to be imprisoned for forty-eight hours. A e woman was fined £5, in default of payment to be sent to gaol for one month. Evading Custody and Assaulting thb Policb.— Charles Thompson was brought up on three charges, viz, escaping from the custody or the bailiff of the Leeston R-M, Court, escaping from the custody of Constable Hilliard, and with assaulting Constable Hilliard while in the performance of his duty. Prisoner pleaded guilty to all. In answer to the magistrate, Constable Hilliard said prisoner had been arrested for debt at Leeston and had escaped. The constable then went after him, and arrested him on Friday night on the Christchurch road at 9 30 p.m. While being taken to the look-up he suddenly turned on the constable, struck him in the face two or three times, and, wishing him "good night,” ran away. The constable, however, succeeded in re-arresting prisoner on Saturday morning at four o’clock. Prisoner had been convicted once tor a simple assault. The Magistrate said the offences were of a very serious nature and might have had serious consequences for the prisoner. As, however, very little was known against him, ho would be treated leniently. He was fined £2, or fourteen days’ imprisonment, for escaping from the constable, and £2, or fourteen days’ imprisonment, for the assault. The charge for escaping from the bailiff was struck out.
