THE LYTTELTON WESLEYAN CHURCH.

The twenty-seventh anniversary of the Wesleyan congregation at port was celebrated on Wednesday night by a soiree and public gathering. The former was held in the schoolroom belonging to the church, and the public meeting took place afterwards in the church itself. Nearly two hundred persons partook of tea, well provided tables being contributed or presided over by the following ladies—Mesdames 8. C. Phillips, Errioksen, Buckley, D. Oyly, B. O. Brown, Hamilton, Higgs, Chambers, J. R. Webb, Dennis, and J. Wood, Allen, Renner. Mr J. Olliver also contributed a table. The room was prettily decorated, and the plentiful show of flowers on the different tables added in no small degree to the beauty of the scene. The public meeting, the attendance at which filled the very commodious church, was a most gratifying one. The Rev. W. B. Marten, the pastor of the church, filled the post of chairman, and after prayer he congratulated the congregation upon the success of the past year’s spiritual work. Referring to the special revival services held a few months since by the Revs. Best and Baumber, assisted by several Christchurch ministers, the rev. chairman said he had reason for believing that no less than forty genuine conversions were secured to the cause. He trusted that a still larger baptism of the Holy Spirit was at hand. The hon. treasurer, Mr B. O. Browne, gave the following particulars of the past year’s financial business:—Receipts to Trust fund, £906 10s 7d ; circuit fund, £435 18i lid ; Sunday School fund, £37 17s 6d ; Home Missions, £47 7s 4d ; balance on hand, £l2 2s 7d. He also reed a most complete report of the year’s undertakings, bis remarks thereon being received with evident satisfaction by the congregation. After the report and balance sheet were read the meeting was addressed by the Revs. Lee, Beck, Fee and the chairman. The choir also gave icveral anthems and musical selections during the’evening.
