fBT TbLBGBAPH.J

WELLINGTON, January 25.

This matoh was oommenoed this morning. The Englishmen arrived at eleven o clock, and immediately afterwards drove on to the ground. The weather during the forenoon was threatening, but in the afternoon it cleared up, and the oun was rather warm. The matoh was played at Newton, and there were not more than 1000 personß presont. The ground wag in good condition, but the wicket appeared a little bumpy. Shaw won the toss, and elected to go to the wiokets. TJilyett and Barlow, as usual, wore first to handle the willow, against the trundling of Armitage and Bayley. Both batsmen played cautiously, and after Ullyett had totted up a few runs, he gave Eirth nt square-leg a rather difficult chance, which was not accepted. Ullyett showed his gratitude by putting Bayley'a next to tho boundary line. Barlow acted on the defensive, Ullyett gaining the runs. Armitiige, after bowling a few overs, was relieved by Luxford, who, after five or ten minutes, had to give way to Hickson. Bayley, from the north end, was well on, and but few runs were scored off him. After an hour's play 50 appeared on the telegraph board, of which number 36 were contributed by Ullyett. On tho score reaching 61, Ullyett, in playing easily to one of Bayley's, was clean bowled—l—43 —61. Solby joined Barlow. The game was now painfully slow, tho bowling being too good to allow of any liberties being taken. When Selby had scored 5 he drew back to a shooter from Bayloy and hit his wicket—2—s—67. Bates followed. Several maidens were now sent down in sucoeesion. Barlow was now neatly taken at the wickets by Mace—3—2o—76 Shrewsbury filled the vacanoy, and at once started the field leather hunting. The bowling was changed at the south end sevoral times, but without the desired effeot. Bates was giving the field some trouble until he gave Barton at mid-on a chance, whioh ho eagerly accepted—4—24—l23. Midwinter joined Shrewsbury, but before scoring was taken by Eirth at long slip. Scotton now oamo in, and the field were kept pretty lively, tho latter acting on defence whiie Shrewsbury was hitting all round. Shrewsbury drove one of Bayley's into Armitage's hands at long-off, but it hopped out again. Shrewsbury and Sootton kept the wiokets until time was callod, the soore then standing at 176 for the loss of only five wickets. Shrewsbury had been at the wickets three hours, and Sootton two hours, and the Wellington fielding was fairly good. The bowling of Bayley, who bowled from the north end all the afternoon, was greatly admired. TO DAY'S PLAY. The crioket match was resumed at 11.30 this morning, with fine weather and a moderate attendance, Shrewsbury and Sootton, the not outs of the previous day, facing the bowling of Bayley and Oootes. Off Oootes' first ball Shrewsbury was neatly taken at short-slip by Cross. No addition was made to his yesterday's total. Emmett joined Sootton, but, after adding 1, gave a chance to Marchant, third man, which was taken—7—l—lß6. Shaw, the captain, filled the gap, but immediately lost Sootton, who was caught at long-on by Armitage, off Bayley.—B—2o—lß6.
