FASHION NOTES.

All the buttons seen on dresses are small and inconspicuous, and in many cases are covered by the trimming. The newest long gloves have slits cut in them, through which coloured ribbons are inserted and tied round the arm. Cord and tassels bid fair to be more fashion■able even than they were last year, and will be arranged as if draping tbe tunic, or worn as heavy girdles. Among ornaments appears the questionable one of an eol winding round the waist till its head and tail meet under a buoklo in aoquamarine and emeralds. Silk stockings show a broad Vandyke of contrasting colors, such as yellow on black, Indian red on pale green, and scarlet on either light or indigo blue. Shoes and stockings no longer merely clothe tbe feet, but in this era of short dresses indicate as clearly as a guide-book the quality of the wearer's taste. Enormous floral designs sprawl over some of the new cretonnes for dresses. The worst •of all these large patterns is that they look so distressingly like bed furniture. For aristocratic household dogs are now provided cushions of plush, consisting of a centre mat with a raised border, which is stuffed with wool and has an outside covering of velvet or plush on which a design in crewel work is seen. Biding habits are no longer black, navy bine and bottle green taking precedence. The okirt is short, while the basque body is pointed in front, a small plain collar being fastened by a fanciful pin, m quaint device of bng, fly or moth. Masculine plumage is fast taking on the bright colors of a century ago. Light blues and russet green suits, gorgeous neok wear and astonishingly embroidered garments declare that tbe dandies are determined that tbe ladies shall not monopolise gay hues. Pretty hand screens or other house ornaments are made of the large oval straw fans iai sale everywhere during the past summer. Clusters of bright flowers, ferns and bits of wood moss are arranged as a freizs around the edge of the fan, and in the centre is set a large bow of satin ribbon. Two of these fans tied together make a very pretty mantel ornament. A handsome reception toilet recently worn was of deep hunter’s green surah, with long panels faced with canary-colored satin. Tbe bodice trimmings were faced to correspond, including a dainty shoulder capo fastened with a rich gold clasp set with emeralds. 'The crown of the poke bonnet worn with

this dress was covered with smooth Venetian green feathers, and the brim of drawn satin was of the darkest green, with face-trimmings of canary-coloured satin, Outside the bonnet was adorned with deep green ostrich tips and Isabella roses.
