Scarlet fever has increased in Auckland and the suburbs. Prize Firing. The members of the Auckland Naval Brigade held a competition for money prizes annually given by insurance companies in recognition of their services at fires. _ Petty officer Smith won the first prize with the magnificent score of 73 out of a possible 84. A Capsize. A sailing boat capsized in the harbor through a sheet being fast, but the two occupants of it—Charles Darling and Edward McGinny—were rescued by a boat from the steamer Annie Millbank. King TawMaoTawhaio and party of chiefs visited the Auckland Timber Company’s mill to day and other leading manufactories, and were entertained at a banquet at J. O. Eirth’s residence, with the Mayor and City Councillors and a large number of leading citizens. A limelight exhibition was given this evening at the Albert Hall in honor of the Native guests. Tawhaio and party leave for Kaipara tomorrow by the train. WELLINGTON, January 23. Ihe Holiday. To-day being the Anniversary Day of the province it was observed as a general holiday, There was beautiful weather for the regatta and the Druids’ fete, which were the principal attractions. The Krst Class Yacht Race was won by the Auckland built yacht Thetis, the Xariffa, which won the Lyttelton yacht race, was second. Tho Second Class Yacht Race was won by the Pet. Owing to absence of vessels there was no Coasters’ Race. The water proved too rough to allow of outrigger and other races. OAMARU, January 23. The late RainThe heavy rain has done no injury to the crops in the Oamaru district, but will improve the pastures, which previously were partially burnt by tho drought. Scholastic. Tho Board of Governors of the Waitaki High School have resolved that the Agent- , General and two University professors should | associate themselves for the purpose of procuring the services of a head master. DUNEDIN, January 23. InquestThe woman Hargetts, who committed suicide in Bath street on Saturday, was depressed in spirits owing to losses sustained by her husband, who was formerly well-to-do in Wellington. The verdict returned was « Temporary insanity.”
Value of City Property. _ The total valuation of the city for municipal purposes amounts to £305,414, being an increase over last year of per cent., and showing a total increase during last eight years of 85 per cent. Larnaoh, 0.M.G., formerly Minister of Public Works, met with a buggy accident on Sunday right, dislocating bis ankle and fracturing the small bono of his leg.
