BY THE ALMA BIVEB. The Battle of the "Alma" was fought September 20th, 1854. The Bussian force numbered 35,000 men, strongly entrenched on heights of their own selection. The Allioa consisted of 28,000 English, 28,000 E/enoh, and 6000 Turks. The Allies were victorious, and thus opened the rood to Sebastopol. Willie! fold your little hands ; Let it drop, that " soldier " toy, Look where father's picture standsFather who here kissed his boy Not two months since—father kind, Who this night may—never mind Mother's sob, my Willie dear ; Call aloud that He may hear Who is God of Battios; say, " O ! keep father safe this day By the Alma Biver." Aai no more, child ! never heed Either Buss., or Frank, or Turk, Bight of nations, or of oreed, Chance—poised victory's bloody work ; Acy flig i' tho wind may roll On tho heights, Sebastopol; Willie! a 1 to you and me la chat spot, where'er it be, Where he stands—no other word ! Stands—God sure the child's prayer heard— By the Alma Bivar.* Willie ! listen to the bells Kinging through the town to-day, IThat's for viotory. Ah! no knells For tho many swept away— Hundreds! thousands! —Let us weep, We who need not, just to keep Eoajon steady in my brain Till tho morning comes again. Till the third dread morning tell Who they were that fought and fell By tho Alma Eivor. Oomo ! we'll lay us down, my child, Poor the bed is, poor and hard, Yet thy father—far exiled, Sleeps upon the open sward, Dreaming of us two at homo; Or beneath the starry dome Digs out trenches in the dark, Where he buries—Willie ! mark— Whore he buries those who died Fighting bravely at his side By the Alma Biver. Willie! Willie! go to sleep. God will keep us, O! my boy; He will make the dull hours creep Foster, and send news of joy. When I ne'ed not shrink to meot Theoo dread placards in the street, Which, for weeks, will ghastly stare In aomo eyes—child ! say thy prayer Once again ; a different one ; Bay, " O ! God, Thy will be done By the Alma Biver." —Miss Mt/loch.
