Tawhiao and chiefs, accompanied by Major Mair and the Oity Councillors, visited the Mangere settlement, where Tawhiao resided previous to the war. On their rjturn as wes entertained by the Mayor at his residence at Bemuera. Tawhiao made a speech, in which he thanked the Major for his kindness, and stated he would have a groat sathering la March at Kopua, and invited all Europeans to it. He returned to Auckland in the evening, when a torchlight prooeseion and display of fireworks by the fire brigado and naval brigade took place in honor of tho Native guests. Tawhiao took part in the procession, and let off fireworks. He was immensely delighted.

Another woman named Kirkpatrick, the wife of a well-to-do settler, out her throat and now lies in a oritioal state. The Ram Fair. Tho ram fair next Wednesday will be tho biggest over ever hold here. Over 1000 are catalogued. Found Browned. Two dead bodies wera found in the Mohaka liver on Saturday. One was identified as ITloyd, of Kereopa, who disappeared a fortnight ago. The other is not known. The eupploramitary " Gazette" issued this afternoon proclaims! the now licensing districts under the Licensing Act, whioh was passad last session. The Union Steamship Company agree to convey volunteer members of the New Zealand Ritio Association to and from Nelson on the samo torms as last year, viz., return tickets single fares.

Fourteen members of the Dunedin police force have applied for transference on aooounfc of an order recently issued by Inspeotor Weldon requiring tho men to wear uniform at certain hours when off duty. Sale of a Valuable Estate. The High Schools endowment at Wyndham in Mataura district ware sold by auction yesterday, in rural, suburban, and town lots. The total amount realised was £17,632. ABHBURTON, January 22. The Weather. Several days prevalence of driving rain have caused anxiety to the farmers having out crops lying on the ground. At half-past twelve to-day the Bky oleared, and there seems a fair ohanoe of sunshine and a good ■drying wind continuing. The prospeots of the average yield per aars are better than were at first anticipated.
