In official circles no results are anticipated from the congress of great Powers which Bismarck has summoned to consider the position of the Pope, and to guarantee his independence. It is considered likely that the Congress will not take place. A sculling match has been arranged to take place on the Thames on the 20th June between Hanlan and Ross, the former having already left New York for the purpose of training on the Thames. Trickett tpeako of following Hanlan to England. A prospectus has been issued of the Hawkins Hill Gold Mining Company, New South Wales, with a capital of £IOO,OOO, with the Duke of Manchester as chairman of the Board of Directors.
The Agent-General of New South Wales has written to the “ Times,” answering the criticisms which recently appeared in that journal on the financial position of New South Wales. He contends that the surplus revenue of the colony is employed in carrying out reproductive public works, and points out that the railways throughout the colony return a net profit of over 4 per cent. A dreadful massacre by American Indians has just taken place in Arizona. Twenty-five persons were murdered.
The Rev. Sanger, a dissolute clergyman of Yorkshire, has been committed for trial on a charge of having set fire to and burnt hia church.
The “Times” published a letter from a correspondent which suggested that tho colonists should adopt some method of registering their stock, instead of, as at present, issuing and selling open debentures. If this suggestion were carried out, the correspondent believes that agents and others would rapidly avail themselves of what would in reality bo a now fixed mode of investment.
One of the persons implicated in the removal of the body of tho late Earl Crawford from the family mausoleum at Daneeh, Aberdeenshire, has offered to disclose the place where it is secreted.
The largest steel steamer yet built has been launched at Belfast. She has bean named tho Garfield, and is intended for the Australian trade.
The Rev. Geo. Sanger has been diccharged. Sir John Holder, the Attorney-General in the Beaoonsfield Government, has been appointed one of the Judges of tho Court of Queen’s Bench in place of Justice Lush. The Royal mail steamer City of Sydney, which has arrived at San Francisco with the Australian and New Zealand mails, reports that tribal hostilities are likely to break out at Api, one of the islands of the South Pacific.
Tho screw steamer Lion, bound from Greenock to Newfoundland, has been wrecked off the latter place. Forty-three of the crew and passengers were lest. Sir Hercules Robinson, Governor of the Cape, has been appointed Governor of the British Transcei territory. The Marquis of Lome, Governor-General of Canada, who has been on a visit to England, leaves on his return voyage to Canada to-day.

The floating of the Hawkins Hill Gold Mining Company, New South Wales, has provoked a correspondence in the “Daily News,’’ The day after the prospectus appeared, a correspondent drew attention to the similarity between it and that of the British Australian Company, which was attempted to be started some time ago. Messrs Ashucst, Morris and Co., solicitors, explained that they had purchased an interest in tho British Australian Company, and that the directors of the new company were satisfied as to the bona fidea of the venture. Mr Alfred Fairfax, one of the directors, and who knows the locality, has also written to the same paper affirming that the ground to be worked is of the most valuable character.
Mr Dillwyn, M.P. for Swansea, communicated with Mr Gladstone with respect to the wine duties, and in reply the Premier states that when the Government deal with the question next session they will not omit to take it into consideration.
The bodies of two Irish bailiffs, who have been missing for a week, have been found together in a lake in Counties Gelway and Mayo. There is no doubt they were brutally murdered. Five persons have been arrested on suspicion of having been concerned in the murder. The investigation which has taken place reveals the fact that the bodies found in Lough Mask ore.not those of the missing bailiffs. News has been received that fifty ladies have left New York for Ireland, their object being to assist the promoters of the Irish Women’s Land League in carrying out their programme. [“ AGB” SPBCIAIS.J LONDON, January 9. Heavy gales have been experienced at; i Orkney Islands. Thunder storms have been of unusual severity, and the fall of snow greater than has been known for many years. Much damage has been dona to the farms, some of which have been nearly destroyed, and several deaths are reported to have occurred; Intelligence has been received from India that Theabaw, Eing of Burmah, is dying. It is stated that unmistakable signs of insanity have developed themselves, and hia condition is such that bis death is regarded as imminent. At Cork a very excited feeling is manifested, and the city is practically under military control. Sentries are placed in the streets, and all passers-by are subjected to a challenge. The utmost precautions are considered necessary to prevent disturbance. Anarchy in Armenia has become so great that Earl Dafferin, the British Ambassador at Constantinople, has been instructed to make representations on the subject to the Ports. His Excellency has had several interviews with the Sultan, and has urged upon him the absolute necessity of some remedial measures being applied, such as were promised under the treaty entered into with Great Britain; in view of a possible rising among Turcomans.
The Russian forces stationed at 'ho fortress of Askhabad, South Khivan desert, have been strongly reinforced. Much alarm has been caused in the United States by the spread of smallpox. The number of cases during the past four months has greatly increased, especially in California, and the authorities are called upon to take mere stringent measures of precaution. From the circumstances arising cut of the trial of Guiteau a Bill has been introduced into the United States Congress for the purpose ot defining legal insanity. In consequence of the unsettled condition of the country, and of attempts made to tamper with the loyalty of the men, the Irish Executive have decided that the Irish militia shall not be embodied during the present vear.
A steamer has just arrived at Liverpool, from New Orleans, which reports that much damage was occasioned to the vessel during her voyage by the explosion of an infernal machine. The outrage is attributed to Fenian agency, and a strict investigation is being held into the circumstances. Arrangements are being mads for the negotiation of a commercial treaty with Italy, and the hope has been expressed by tu3 Italian Government that England will consent to a reduction of duties on wines.
The Imperial rescript issued by the Emperor of Germany claiming prerogative support from all officials employed by the Government, has met with strong condemnation, and the principles embodied therein have bean sharply censured by most of the loading Germrn organs. Their criticisms nave so incensed the Court that Chancellor Bismarck now threatens to confiscate all newspapers Hub continue their opposition.
Search for arms in Ireland is being vigorously prosecuted by the police, and an extensive find has been made on some farms in tna vicinity of Rusheen, The polios wore attacked when making the seizure, but succeeded in obtaining the arms. The Anti-Jewish feeling, so strongly expressed in Russia and Germany, is also fcairg manifested in Austria. The authorities have received information which shows that rioto directed against the Jewish inhabitants are likely to occur in the town of Czernowitz, Province of Euckowina. Preventive measure# will bo taken.
Intelligence has been received from the Cape, bbating that fighting has commenced between the Damsras and Namaqaas, two powerful tribes in South Africa. The settlement made by Sir Hercules Robinson for. pacific ition of Basutoland has not resulted satisfactorily and the condition of allaira thero it very unsettled, so that it is fepred that hostilities mny again break out.
