[BX T'ETiBSBAPH.] [Per s.s. Alhambra, at the Bluff.] MELBOUBNE, January 14. The public interest during the past week has been centered in the cases of small-pox at the quarantine station. Additional police have been sent to the station to ensure the observance of the quarantine regulations. The doctor is confident of being able to prevent the spread of the disease. The patients have every comfort, and cricket and tennis materials have been sent. Every possible precaution is being taken against the introduction of smallpox either by sea or overland from Sydney. An ambnlanoe is kept ready at the barraoks, and the polioe are ordered to report and isolate any suspicious cases immediately they are brought under notice. The Speaker of the Assembly is about to pay a visit for several weeks to New Zealand. It is stated on good authority that if the Government cannot appoint Mr Murray Smith or Mr Francis as Agent-General the existing arrangements whereby Col. Paisley represents the oolony will be oontinued. The importation of grapes from Europe is prohibited by an Order in Council. The reason of this step is that a large quantity was recently imported by one of the Orient steamers.
The Government are taking steps for the proper representation of the colony at Bordeaux. Several exhibits are promised, and special commissioners will be probably appointed. A seaman, named Barry, of the schooner Zephyr, from Greymoutb, missed his hold while aloft and fell on to the deck. Death was instantaneous.
The ship Allanshaw, from London has arrived. She reports that a seaman fell over* board. A boat was launohed and prooeeded in search but filled and disappeared. The second officer clung to the boat, but the seamen who accompanied him were drowned.
