The Egyptian Assembly of Notables, which opened its sittings last month, has passed resolutions defining its own powers, and virtually assuming control of the Government of the Kingdom. At the Weeleyan Conference now being held here, a fund is being started in aid of the families of the Wesleyan clergymen who were drowned by the wreck of the Tararua. The subscriptions already amount to £2OOO. Another Smallpox Victim. One of the Garonne's passengers named Morgan died of smallpox at the Quarantine station to-day. No fresh cases have been reported from the station. Shippings 1 Sailed this morning—The steamship Rotorua for the Bluff. SYDNEY, January 17. Good Investments. The City Bank pays a dividend of 10 per cent, for the past half-year. £SOOO is carried to the reserve fund. The Mercantile Bank declares a dividend of 9 per cent, for the past half-year, and carries forward £3037.
