The death is announced of the Hon. Sir Robert Lush, one of the Judges of the Queen’s Bench, at the advanced age of seventy-four years. The London “ Gazette ” contains an official anneuncement that the honor of knighthood has been conferred upon Judge Lilley, Chief Justice of Queensland. Italy has been thrown into a state of intense excitement by the announcement that Prince Bismarck has appealed to the Groat Powers to arrive at some conclusion as to the real position occupied by the Pope. It is believed that this course has been taken in consequence of the Pope’s declaration on Christmas Eve, when receiving the Cardinals and members of the Sacred College, that his position had become intolerable, and that be was practically a prisoner in the Vatican. The result of Bismarck’s appeal is looked forward to with much interest. As disturbances in Ireland continue to increase, the Government have determined to divide the disaffected portion into five districts, in which the administration of justice will be left entirely under the control of the military authorities. The police have a clue to the persons implicated in the robbery of the body of the late Earl Crawford from the mausoleum at Duneoht, Aberdeenshire. The body of the late Earl is supposed to have been taken to London. A strict investigation into the whole matter is now proceeding. Latest reports show that the Nihilists’ attempt to destroy the Russian naval station at Cronstadt by fire on Christmas Day was not very successful, as the flames were extinguished before much damage was done. The Egyptian Chamber of Notables has been formally opened by the Khedive in person, A collision has taken place off Roches Point, Cork harbor, between the Cunard Company’s steamer Catalonia and the Norwegian steamer Helenslea. The latter was sunk and nine lives were lost.
The latest bulletin* with respect to the health of Lord Selbourne, Lord Chancellor of England, are more satisfactory, and it is believed that ho has practically recovered from the illness, which was considered of a serious character.
The Menageries Maritime Company are rapidly completing their arrangements for the regular steam service between Marseilles and Australia. Several large steamers are in course of construction for the service, and one, which has been christened “ Melbourne,” was launched to-day. Telegraph communication is being extended in China, a line having just been opened to Tien Tain, a city 158 miles from Peking, and known as “ Liverpool China.” The Cape Government have decided to abandon Basutoland rather than incur the cost and loss which another war would involve.
A great landslip has taken place near tbe Jungfrau, a celebrated mountain in Switzerland. A great many houses were destroyed, but providentially no loss of life occurred. In reply to a request made by the representatives of the British Cable Company that steps might be taken to protect ocean cables from carelessness or wilful interference, a communication has been received from the Board of Trade intimating that submarine cables are matters of international regulation, but at the same time encouraging the hope that some action will be taken.
The “ Pall Mall Gazette," commenting on the recent disclosures in connection with the Milburn Creek Copper Mine Company, and the consequent expulsion of Mr Baker from the Hew South Wales Assembly, expresses the opinion that the matter should be left with the Court to deal with.
The Marquis of Huntley, who is charged with fraud, has left the country, and is believed to be in Russia. Steps will be taken to obtain his extradition.
A seizure has been made of a person and some documents belonging, it is believed, to “Captain Moonlight’s" band. The revenue returns for nine months from 31st March to 31st December, 1881, have just been published, and show an increase over the same period in 1880 of over £2 500,000. Bulwer, nephew of Lord Lytton, has been reappointed Governor of Natal, vice MajorGeneral Colley. A Papal Nuncio no w in Vienna proposes that a certain portion of territory from the Rome see shall be given up to the Pope. It is considered that this will remove the difficulty I which now exists with respect to the actual position occupied in Italy by the Pope.
