SHEFFIELD AND WADDING. TON SPORTS.

These sports were held on Monday last in a paddook adjoining the railway station, Sheffield. The attendance of the public was not quite so great as last year, but the entries for the different events were more numerous, with one exception—the mile race. The Springfield Brass Band was conspicuous by its absence, the committee considering their terms for the day too high. The sports commenced at 11.30 a.m., and were not finished until 7 p.m. The following officers were on the ground, and were indefatigable in their attempts to amuse the public:—Messrs J. lord, secretary; Q-. A. Keys, judge; G. E. Jebson, starter; B. Colthart and W. Jebson, handicappers; and Messrs Willis, Beid, Brown and other stewards. Mr J. Horner took charge of “ Aunt Sally the venerable old lady realised £3 12s 9d for the club funds. Mr W. Graham had charge of the children, Mr Flanagan had the publican’s booth, and provision was made for the ladies in the shape of tea, &c„ in a tent close by. The following are the events : Quoits. First prize £l, second 10s ; entrance Is fid. J. Horner 1 W. Eebinson _ 2 Quarter-mile Handicap Hurdle Bace, six flights, 3ft 6in. First prize £2, second £l, third 10s ; entrance 3s fid. White, 10yds 1 Alexander, syds 2 D. Mcßeth, scratch 3 Five entries. White won easily by the length of bis handicap allowance. One Hundred Yards Bace, handicap. First prize 10s, second 15s, third ss; entrance 2s fid.

First heat. O’Shaughnessy, 4yds 1 E. Brown, 3yds 2 Second heat. Vincent, scratch 1 Napier, 3yds 2 Final heat. E. Brown, 2yds 1 W. Napier, 4yds 2 O’Shaughnessy, 2yds 3 There were ten entries for this event, and it was run off in heats, the first two in each heat contesting. The last heat was a grand race. Johnson, 3yds 1 Napier, 4yds 2 Vincent, scratch 3 Brown, 2yds, also started. Two hundred yards. Johnson, scratch 1 Vincent, scratch 2 Napier 3 A good race, Johnson winning by two yards ; about the same distance between Vincent and Napier. Four hundred and forty yards. Napier, 10yds ... ... ... 1 Johnson, scratch 2 Vincent, 3yds 3 A very hollow race, Napier winning with ease, bo that Johnson took first prize and Napier second, no third being awarded, as there were only four entries.
