Martin, publican, has been committed for trial on a charge of receiving stolen property from John Ornsbein, the property of A. H. Nathan, merchant. Bail was allowed. A Suicide. George Cook, sixty years old, shot himself at Drury. He has been receiving Government rations, and was in a desponding condition. Aquatics. A sculling match has been arranged between Albert White and Carter, of Sydney, to row in Mercury Bay for £SO a-side, changing boats. This match arises out of the Mercury Bay regatta races, White thinking Carter won by the superiority of his boat. Insufficient Evidence. At the criminal sittings, John Scarborough and Maurice Hcfferman were both acquitted in cases of indecent assault. NAPIBR, January 6. Fire InquestThe inquest on the fire at Blackburn’s Rope Factory ended in a verdict “ That the jury are of opinion that Blackburn’s shed was set on fire from the inside, but as to who the person or persons were who originated the fire there is no evidence to show, but the jury wish to add that the evidence also shows that the properly was over insured, and that Blackburn fraudulently misrepresented the value of his property. The jury think that the insurance companies are to blame for accepting the risk without first surveying the property.” WELLINGTON, January 6, Crime.
At the Supreme Court to-day Joseph Patrick MoDufi was acquitted on a charge of fraudulent bankruptcy. The Court adjourned until Monday, when an action for slander, claiming £IOOO damages, brought by the Mayor against James Stewart, will be heard. Only one criminal ease remains on the sheet, and that will be taken on Thursday next. DUNEDIN, January 6. The Attendance at the Sports. The total attendance at the Caledonian games for three days was 22,000, of whom 1.6,000 paid for admission. CrimeAt the Supreme Court Ann Byron Schado and Thomas Byron, her son, were charged with shooting With intent at John Thomas Thornton. The facts of the case wore peculiar, The prosecutor worked on a station near Cromwell, and on the 10th of November ho got his cheque and proceeded to the Mount Pisa Hotel, kept by the female prisoner. He remained drinking till midnight, and was then pushed out of the house, and he endeavored to goin re admission when Mre Sohade called to her son to fire with a gun at him through o panel of the door which he had broken. The son did so, and the shot entered Thornton’s leg. For the defence, it was alleged that Thornton had made improper proposals to Mrs Sohade, which led to his being turned out, and that he had ottempted to enter her bedroom window. After retirement, the jury found the son guilty of shooting with intent, the mother of aiding and abetting him, and a sentence of two month* with hard labor was passed on each. A Novel Machine. A bricklayer resident in the suburbs has perfected a machine for the manufacture of gas out of animal carbon. The experiments have been most successful. A patent is applied for. The cost is vastly less than from coal.
