ST. ALBANS BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An adjourned meeting of the St, Albans Borough Council was held last evening at the Avon Hoad Board Office, Papanui road. Present —His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Matson, Bull, Moore, Money, Bountree, Blakiston, Mann and Dickenson. —The Mayor said the first business the Council would have to proceed with was the appointment of a valuator. According to the Hating Act this appointment had to be made before the 15th January. Mr Beatson was at present engaged in making a valuation roll for tho Avon district, inclusive of the borough of St. Albans, and it would be for the Council to consider whether it would be necessary to go to the expense of having a fresh valuation made for St. Albans.—Or. Matson thought it would be as well to avail themselves of the valuation being made by Mr Beatson. Ho moved—“ That Mr Beatson be appointed valuator of the rateable property within the borough.”—Or. Moore seconded the motion, which was carried. —Or. Matson moved—“ That Mr W. P. Beatson be appointed town clerk, surveyor, collector, and treasurer to tho municipality at a salary of £250 per annum, the engagement to be subject to three months' notice on either side.” Cr. Dickinson seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr Beatson expressed his willingness to accept the appointment on the terms mentioned. The question of the appointment of a solicitor was deferred until next meeting. It was resolved that the ordinary fortnightly meetings of the Council be held every alternate Monday, beginning on the I6th January next. The following committees were appointed :—Finance and by-laws, Crs. Matson, (Turner and Blakieton ; works, sanitary, end lighting, Crs, Bull, Money and
Dickinson. The Mayor was appointed a member of each committee ex officio. The finance committee was instructed to furnish at next meeting a design tor a common seal ) for the borough. It was resolved, on the motion of Or. Moore, seconded by Or. Bull—- “ That the finance committee be authorised to confer with the Avon Road Board with a view to arranging for a division of the property, rates, &c., between the Road Board and the borough." Or. Matson gave notice that he would move at next meeting—" That a banker be appointed for the Council.” After discussing some routine matters, the Council adjourned.
