The body of William Kempt, drowned at Maburangi, has been recovered. The boy in the boat with him clung to tho boat for two hours and a half before he was rescued. The E. C- Bazaar. The total receipts of the Catholic bazaar in aid of the building fund of St. Benedict’s Church, Newton, were £9lO. An Urgent Necessity. The Hon. T. Dick telegraphs that the licensing districts will be declared imme* diately. Crime. In tho Supreme Court, Auckland, yesterday, John Borrie was found guilty of maliciously wounding a horse. Ho was recommended for mercy by the jury, and was discharged on entering into his recognisances to appear for sentence when required. Alfred dunes was acquitted of robbing Gilbert Dobson. Michael O’Connor was convicted of attempted rape on Kepa, a Maori woman. Sentence was deferred. Outside the Gaming Act. The prize money was paid to-night to the winners at the Auckland meeting as follows : —Mr Walters- £437 ;Mr John Smith, £434 ; Mr Horsford, £370; Mr Bates, ,£226 ; Mr Vallanoe, £152 ; Mr Samuel Morrin, £142 ; Mr Michael Gallagher, £95 ; Mr Legard, £104; Mr Bobbott, £B7 ; Mr Pilbrow, £3B ; Mr D. Three men have been summoned for alleged personation and plural voting at tbe Waipawa election. The Drink Again. A man named Thos. Floyd, who hung the Maori rebel Keropa, is missing from a camp in Mohika. He was suffering from delirium tremens, and a companion left him to obtain assistance, and in the meantime he disappeared. Suspected Arson. Blackburn’s rope factory at Hastings having boon burned down under suspicious circumstances, the insurance companies demanded an inquest, which is now being held Blackburn, iu his evidence, contradicted him self greatly, and others of his statements were disproved by witnesses. The evidence so far does not relate to the fire, but to the value of the buildings and stock, which were insured for £650, and which are stated not to have been worth £2OO. Blackburn admitted that the buildings were not worth £BO, although ho valued them at £l6O when taking out the policy. The insurance agents had decided to cancel the policy on the night of the fire. This is the second time that Blackburn has been burned out under similar circumstances. Stock ShowThe ram fair to be held on the 261 h inst. promises to be a great success, the demand lor high class stock being very brisk.

New Coal FieldCoal of _ good quality has been found in the Mohika district, but so far from town that it is questionable whether it will pay to work it. WANGANUI, January 5. The Drink Mania. Joseph Thompson, while intoxicated, made a determined attempt at suicide by jumping off the Wanganui bridge this evening. Ho was rescued by a boat from tho steamer Clyde and locked up. In 1868 the same man jumped over the cliff at Okarna, but was saved through his clothes catching in the bushes. About a year ago he threw himself into the Hutuka river and narrowly escaped drowning, NELSON, January 5., Fire. A six-roomed house in Brook street Valley, occupied by Mr Pusoh, was destroyed by fire to-day. Considerable difficulty was experienced in rescuing his wife, who is an invalid. The bouse belonged to Mr Cullen, of Pioton, and was insured in the Liverpool, London, and Globe office for £IOO. Mr Pusch, who is a maker of plaster of Paris images, had his furniture and models insured in the New Zealand office for £4OO and the stock of images for £250. WBLLNGTON, January 6. DUNEDIN, January 5. The Gaming ActA case came on at the Police Court to-day in which a hairdresser in High street was charged with being the keeper of a common gaming house. A totalisator is kept on the premises, and the particular event on which action is taken is the Invercargill races. The case was adjourned. CrimeAt the Supreme Court to-day the only case of any interest was that of John Gordon, charged with a breach of the Fraudulent Debtors Act, 1878, in having filed a declaration of insolvency, and having subsequently with intent to defraud bis creditors, failed to fully and truly discover to the trustee the sum of £320, his property. Tho facts were that when accused filed he stated his assets to be only £5 worth of wearing apparel, but within a month afterwards he gave £320 to a hotelkeeper to keep for him. This was in March. In September he was arrested for drunkenness, when he had £197 in his pocket and a gold watch. He was found “ Guilty,” and sentence was deferred.
