The Annexation of RaiateaThe “ Daily News” publishes a statement to the effect that the French Government repudiates the reported annexation of Raiatea, one of the Society Islands. Obituary—Ralph Bernal Osborne, the well-known politician, aged sixty-eight ; and Professor John William Draper, the American scientist, aged seventy-one. AUSTRALIA. [reuteb’s telegrams.] MELBOURNE, January 6, The s.s. Garonne. The Orient steamship Garonne has arrived here, and has been quarantined. She has forty-three passengers for New
Zealand ports. It is uncertain whether she will remain here or go on to Sydney as nsnal.
NEW ZEALAND. [PEB PBKSS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH, January 6. The Stabbing Case. James Henry was again brought up this morning, charged with wounding W. Millett at Opunake. He was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. AUCKLAND, January 6. Fires. Siffins’ auction mart was completely gutte d by fire this morning. The insurances are— Stock, £IOOO in the National, and £3OO in the Northern ; building, £3OO in the Victoria, and £2OO in the National. A five-roomed bouse was burned at Onehunga yesterday. The insurance are £250 on the house in the South British, and £IOO on the furniture in the Standard. WELLINGTON, January 6. The s s- Wakatu. The steamer Wakatu, which arrived from Wanganui this morning, struck on the Torris rook, near Terawhiti, at 7.30 a.m. The second mate was in charge. The vessel is making water fast, it being supposed that one of her plates is split. The pumpe are hard at work, and after discharging she will go on the slip. A preliminary inquiry will bo held tomorrow. DUNEDIN, January 6. Fire. A seven-room boarding-house in Cumberland street was destroyed by fire early this morning. Mrs Crawford was the occupier. The house was insured in the Northern for £IOO and was owned by the Hon. Mr Mantell. Supreme Court. At the Supreme Court to-day the following sentences were passed :—John Gordon, fraudulent bankruptcy, six months; James Wilson, larceny, two years ; John Dupree, police constable, for stealing fowls, two years ; Frank Thomson, robbery, throe years. Supreme Court. For the Civil Sittings three common jury oases are set down, and seven special jury cases, including a libel action, Massey v Allen, which came before the Court in October as a criminal action.
