ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting oi; the Ashburton County Council was held on Wednesday, Present—Mess's W. 0. Walker (chairman), H. T. Winter, Hugo Priedlander, E. GK Wright, M.H.E., T. Bullock, Julian Jackson, and Duncan Cameron, Tha engineer’s report was read. Mr Wright took exception to the Council’s apparently neglecting the Mount Hutt creeks as a source for supplementing the general water supply of the plains. It appeared to him that this supply could be obtained at a trifling cost, while the Connell were asked to consider a scheme (or tapping the North Ashburton, which would entail considerable expense. He would move the appointment of the chairman and Messrs Jackson, Priedlander, and the mover as a committee to report on the w hole question. Tho opposition of Mount Hutt proprietors meant nothing so far as the Council was concerned, as tho Waterworks Act empowered the Council to deal with the ws.ter in the two rivers and their tributaries. Mr Hugo Friedlander seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr N. Walsh, of Eakaia, waited on the Council, and complained of a deviation that bad been made on a line of waterracs originally proposed to run through his property, bat which deviation had deprived him of water. It was decided to adhere to the original rente. The chairman was instructed to take legal advice as to the most expeditious means of dealing with parties guilty of tampering with water-raoes, and to have notices served that persistence in malpractices in connection with tho supply would be followed by cutting off tho water from farms where such practices might be indulged in. Resolved to invite tenders for the construction of the Montalto race, with a view to its completion in May, The reserves committee and tho committee appointed to confer with the Borough Council on the subject of charitable aid, obtained extension of time for tabling their reports. Letters from Mr O. P. Cox and Mr C. J. Harper, requesting waber- races in tho Hinds district, were referred to the engineer. A recent resolution passed by the Monet Hutt Road Board was forwarded with details of s storm-water drainage schema proposed by that body, with a request that the Council should bear a quarter of the cost It was also urged that the Eakaia district, being benefited by the proposedsoheme toagreUer degree than the Mount Hutt district, the former should bear half the cost. The Eakaia Board, on the other hand, denied the truth of this, statement, and averred that the greater benefit would accrue to South Eakaia. The South Eak aia Board’s ntatemeat was remitted to the Mount Hutt Board for consideration, A petition from Dromore residents for small loop-line races was referred to the engineer. Mr Wright moved for the appointment of a committee, consisting of Messrs Cameron, Jackson, tho chairman and the mover, to confer with the Borough Council on the subject of a joint administration of the hospital and charitable aid of the county with a view to economy, the present system entailing a heavy loss on both bodies. The motion was carried. Several extensions of time were granted to contraotars in view of harvest. A. motion by Mr Wright was passed to apply to Government for one-third of the proceeds of all deferred payment land sales within the county. The consideration of the water supply at Wakanui was postponed for a month. Mr Friedlander tabled a notice of motion Council will take into consideration at next meeting the expediency of recommending to Government the appointment of; a resident valuator for the County of Ashburton; also, that the clerk be instructed to write to the various Soad Boards within the county for a return of amounts expended for rate rolls.”
