AKAROA ATHLETIC SPORTS.
These sport* were held on Monday, January 2nd, in the paddook kindly lent by Dr, Watkins. The committee consisted of :—Messrs J. D. Garwood, Her. H. Stocker, J. J. Kissel, W, Meesh, G. Armstrong, J, Watkins, H. Billens, F. Anning, dork of the course. In oonseqnenoe of counter attractions the attendance was not so good as last year. The pro.gramme was as follows : 100 Tarda Bace, for boya under twelve. First prize, 5b ; second, 2b fid. Peter Glynan 1 Nigel Watkins 2 100 Yards Bace, open. First prize, 20s; second, 7s 6d, Walter Watkins and Joseph Armstrong ran a dead beat. High Jump, for boys under fifteen; First prize, 7s 6d ; second, 2s 6d. Jaa. Daly, 4ft 3iu 1 Frank Scott, 3ft llin 2 440 Yards, open. First prize, 30s ; second, 10s, Jos. Armstrong 1 Walter Watkins 2 J. Hewitt 3 440 Yards, for boys under fifteen. First prize, 10s ; second, sb. W. Grotty 1 John Glynan 2 High Jump, open. First prize, 15s ; second, Ss. H. Birdling, sft Sin 1 H. Monro, £ft 2in 2 Running Long Jump, for boys under fifteen. First prize, 7s fid ; second, ss. Ernest Watkins. 14ft 1 Jos. Daly, lift fiin 2 A protest having been entered against E. Watkins as being over age, James Daly took first prize and John Glynan second. One Mile Handicap Race, open. First prize, 60s ; second, 20s; third, ss. Ernest Watkins, 90yds 1 Jos. Armstrong, 25yds 2 J. Hewitt, scratch 3 Although this was looked forward to as being the event of the day, it turned out rather a tame affair, as E. Watkins kept the lead all the way, winning by forty yards ; J. Watkins 1 Although there were ten entries, none of the others succeeded in bringing home more than the spoon. Running long Jnmp, open. First prize, ISa ; second, ss. W. Watkins, 16ft 7in 1 H.
