HORORATA BACKS. Patron—Hon. John Hall. Vice-Patron Bicbard Westenra, Esq. Stewards —Messrs W. Rollett, W. Baker,T. Ward, D. Osborne, A. Trafford, T. Napier, B. Maffey, J. B. Harte, G. Baker, W. Oliver, H. Willis, G. Weastell, J. E. Fountaine, T. Jones, J. Napier, J. Brown, J. Hartnell. Judge— T. Upton. Starter—James Oordy. Clerk of the Course—J. Napier. Clerk of the Scales —B. Maffey. Handicappors —J. Oresswell, J. B. Digby. These races came off on January 3rd, on which day the nor-wester blowing spoiled a good deal of the enjoyment anticipated by the good folk of Hororata and environs. The course was very hard indeed, and almost destitute of grass, which made the going very trying for the horses. There were about 600 people on the ground, whom host Napier, of the Hororata Hotel, did an excellent trade with. Messrs Batson and Co. supplied lighter refreshment in an adjoining booth._ Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin had their totalisator on the ground, and were fairly patronised, about £195 having passed through the machine. Seven saddled up for the Maidens, a very middling lot, with the exception of the veteran Shark and Haidee. The latter passed the judge’s box first, but was disqualified by the stewards on a protest lodged by Mr Brown, owner of Shark (who was second), as to age, the mare having been entered as three years old, when it was clearly proved she was four. The Bakaia Gorge Handicap was thenext event, which Albion, the Tasmanian, easily appropriated, being altogether too good for Bouser. The Hurdle Eace brought out only two of the three entered, when Bouser beat The Breeze, a local horse, who was by no means cherry ripe, but who fenced in first-class style, and was very well ridden by Cox. The Hororata Cup was awarded to Hero, a horse from Coalgate, in consequence of Haidee, though first past the post, being disqualified. Mr Trafford’s Thorneoroft, by Messenger, though in no condition, ran a good second to Hero. When this colt gets another year over him, he ought to make a good one over the sticks. Blink Bonnie, who was made a great pot of amongst a certain few, boiled over, as she never showed prominently in any event she was engaged in. The Trot was won by Bob pretty easily, it not being the “ day out ” for that good old mare Polly, who broke four or five times, occasioned by a dog following her. The Ladies' Purse had five who faced the starter. It was supposed by many that it was a moral for Shark, who had been reserved for it, hut Derrett’s mare Haidee again caught the judge’s eye first, though, of course, the race was awarded to Shark. The Consolation was won by Breeze, most patiently and well ridden by Oox. There was an extempore Hack Baoe afterwards. The officials worked well, and with a will; but it would be better for all protests to be settled, when feasible, at once. The Men’s Sports previous to the races went off very well. The Springfield Brass Band also played on the ground, but if the pieces selected had each been a little longer and the interval between them not so lengthened, it would have afforded more enjoyment for the lovers of music. There was a ball in the evening at the school-room, which was well attended.

After a quarter of a mile Esca began to tail off, and was out of the hunt. At the half-mile post Blink Bonnie broke her girths and lost her rider. Coming into the straight the race was left to Shark and Haidee, the latter winning by half a length. Eakaia Gouge and Horobata Handicap of 20 sovs.; distance, two miles. Mr Clayfield’a c g Albion, by Krin, aged, 9st 101 b 1 Mr Crooke’s g g Eonser, 4yrs, Bst 71b ... 2 A good start, Bouser at first leading on sufferance. The next flight having been negotiated, the pace improved a little, Bouser was again pulled back on approaching the fourth hurdle, which both horses jumped well. Bouser then went slightly to the front, gradually improving the pace to the finish, the Breeze being outpaced in the straight. Both horses fenced beautifully. The race from the jump was simply a match between Haidee and Shark, the pace being very merry, but when Haideo, who had a very slight lead, crossed Shark in the straight, her owner eased up. The rest were nowhere. Consolation Handicap of 5 sovs; 1 mile.
